Breastfeeding and periods?

I am breastfeeding my one year old. I last had my period when he was 3months old. I am on the pill. I have been taking my pill at the same time everyday. Recently I noticed some brown discharge which I used to have when my period was ending. Then the following morning I noticed a spot of blood, then some more dark brown discharge. is this normal? What could it be?

Thank you for your advice but i havent had a period since my baby was 3months old, now he is 13months old. The brown discharge just came, with no period. I went to a family planning clinic and saw a nurse. She said because i am breastfeeding and am on the pill, then am not supposed to have any periods. She told me not to worry though and said its normal since i am not breastfeeding as often as before... Am still a bit worried though. I wish i could see a gynae!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
A complete medical evaluation is very important for determining the correct cause of your symptoms. It is common to have this brown discharge after periods. It may be nature’s way of cleaning the body of any dead cells and tissues after a menstrual cycle. Sexually transmitted infections, chlamydia, genital warts and gonorrhea are other causes of such vaginal discharge. Cervical cancer, polyps are few other causes. If the brown discharge is due to a bacterial infection then you may need antibiotics. Consult a gynecologist. I hope it helps.
Best luck and regards!
