Desperate For Answers

Hi,

Please help if you can. I'm a normal, happy 20 year old. About 4 months ago, my reproductive endocrinologist put me on a birth control pill called mono-linyah to help my PCOS. On the last day of my third pack, I had a horrible panic attack, my first one ever. My doctor said I should switch to a different pill and see if I like it better. So a week later, I started taking Junel FE. I was fine for about 10 days, but then in the middle of my second week I started having severe anxiety out of nowhere, which lasted for 2 days. I was shaking, restless and terrified. I've been feeling like that for the past 4 days, still anxious but mostly just feeling sad. I stopped taking it 5 days ago, but still feel this way.

Now, I have no reason to feel like this. I have a great family, am about to graduate college and am generally a happy person. I'm scared that this may not even be related to the birth control and just might be a depressive disorder. Please let me know what you think.

I think it's entirely possible, since you never had those symptoms before taking birth control, that it was due to taking the pill. Some women are just more sensitive to the change in hormone levels that can happen when on the pill.

The thing about panic attacks is that, especially if you've never had one before and you're not familiar with how they are, it can be a scary thing. So once you experience one, you actually start worrying about whether you'll have another one and that can set you off on having another one just because you're thinking too much about it.

One more thing to consider is that PCOS is usually related to hormonal issues. And some hormonal problems can manifest themselves in increased anxiety. Perhaps the pill combined with the hormonal shifts from PCOS may have caused this.

So, for all of these reasons, I don't think you have a depressive disorder but rather you're experiencing hormonal shifts either due to the pill or as a result of the PCOS plus the pill, which has manifested itself in anxiety and sometimes panic attacks.

I'm not a doctor but just someone who has done a lot of research on the pill and anxiety because I've had my own issues that I've been working on for years.
