Strange 24hr "period" on BC, not during placebo week

Hi -

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what might be going on with my body. I've been on birth control for about 6 years and last night I had the strangest scariest thing happen. Within 3 hours of going to bed, I woke up at 2:30p with so much blood that I actually thought it could be a miscarriage even though I knew it wasn't really possible to be pregnant. I confirmed via a birth control test that I wasn't. It had soaked through all my clothes and was everywhere, which is totally abnormal for me.

I've never seen that much blood before and my periods are normally pretty light. I'm 3 days away from ending this pack of pills, but normally my period shouldn't start until 5 days from now. Four hours after that, the bleeding had almost stopped and by 11 am today the whole thing was done with. It was like I had experienced an entire period from start to finish, crammed into 12 hours. I had had a bit of spotting earlier yesterday, but thought it was related to sex from the night before.

I called my gyno, but they can't see me for another week. They said it could be the pills no longer being effective, but wouldn't that just cause a normal period to start? Also, I've been to the gyno recently and they didn't spot any cysts or unusual problems (she did an ultrasound and tests).

If anyone has any thoughts as to what could have happened that would be great. Also, is this something that might happen again? Or is this just a freak thing? Thank you!
