I heard a lot of women are very happy with it, also my best friend is fine with the Mirena.
I myself had a VERY BAD experience with it. I went from being totally fine and healthy to first having many horrible side-effects from the progesterone: not being able to go to the toilet, bloated belly, heavy stomach-pains, migrane, negative moods upto getting really depressed; all things I never had before, to the development of a cyst - one of the most common side-effects of Mirena! After that I had the Mirena removed. But because of the hormonal disbalance it triggered, I ended up with a laparoscopic removal of a 2 cysts of which one was almost 9cm and a lot of adhesions (scartissue) in my belly that had to be removed. Still recovering from the surgery.
Notice I only had that stupid thing for 2,5 months!
I would never recommend Mirena, but everybody has a different response to it. Mine is the and-it-all-went-grong-story, but don't let that lead you. Most important is to be informed. The leaflet the doctor gives you, tells you nothing. Not that it has a bigger risk at perforating the uterus with the placement than a CIU (coppercoil), not that is does have considerable side-effects, just that it's great.

It's the Canadian testreport Bayar released on mirena. It's only directly available to professionals and it might me difficult and confusing to read, but.. at pages 41 there is 'consumer information', which is very clear and informative.
I have had two Mirenas.
My first one was awful. Insertion hurt REALLY bad-the worst pain I have ever felt. And I was run over by a car and it broke my back and skull-the Mirena was worse. They told me it would be a slight pinch and it would be over. They were wrong. While it was in it was my favorite though. I had no side effects from it at all. Six months later though it perforated my uterus and I had to have it surgically removed. I don't blame that on the Mirena though-my ex's penis was freakishly long and I think that is what caused the problem. While I had it, before that though, I loved it. No side effects at all.
I loved it so much that I just had a new one placed Friday. I expected the pain this time, I knew what was coming and I was able to make myself relax. Just make sure your relax, if you stress at all it hurts so much worse when they do the procedure. Also I took a good pain killer about a half hour before going which helped a lot. It's been almost a week now. I am still a little crampy but I had it inserted on the first day of my period-it made my period stop however-so I am supposed to be crampy right now anyways. The cramps are very mild and easy to deal with. Hot baths help so much. Right after getting it I just laid on my couch and took it really easy all night. The next day the pain got pretty bad but that's the worse it's been so far. They say not to have sex for at least 24 hours but I am waiting a week to give my body time to adjust to it a little before doing anything else. Just take it easy the week after getting it, let your body adjust. There are a lot of horror stories out there. But there are a lot of good ones too. Everyone reacts differently and maybe you'll love it. If you want to see more than just horror stories check out this link... it has more of the good and bad-not just the bad. And keep in mind people are more likely to make an effort to write a review about a horrible experience than a good one.

I have the mirena also. I had mine placed in 8/09, so I havent had it very long. But i completely love it!! My periods are light and short! I dont have any abnormal spotting in between periods. My family history is horrible with cysts and any other kind of problem, but I love my mirena so far!! The worse part was getting it placed!!! I do not have any kids, so it hurt so much! They told me it will feel like a normal period cramp but omg! I screamed it hurt so bad!! I probably wouldnt do it again knowing the pain I had to go through...but since I already have it... I wouldnt change it for anything! I love the mirena!! Just take some RX pain killers before you get it placed!!
I do not have kids, and insertion was HORRIBLY painful! And I am a pretty tough girl......
I am currently searching online about Mirena and vaginal e. coli infections, which is my current problem. With a Mirena you are much more prone to all kinds of infection. I have taken loads of antibiotics yet the infection persists. I am probably having the device removed soon. I have been miserable recently. I want this problem to go away! UG!

Good luck!
