I had my mirena for 4 months and had so many bad effects including an ovarian cyst. I hated it... I actually took it out myself yesterday, and feel so so much better.

I had mirena inserted 18 months ago when I lived in Canada. My doctor sold me on the fact that she said I wouldnt have a period for 5 years. I had been taking Depo the previous year with no periods either. Anyway, I went about 8 months after mirena inserted with no period. I then started spotting and that turned into a light period monthly but lasting 2 weeks sometimes. I was experiencing hair loss, acne, mood swings, depression, weight gain. I finally went to doc to have it removed. I explained it all to her and she said mirena wouldnt cause these symptoms with bleeding so she had my thyroid checked as well as sent me for a pelvic ultrasound which I had this morning. No insurance :( I will get results of that soon but my pap was great and bloodwork normal all around so I am not sure what is happening. The bleeding should not be taking place as mirena thins the lining of the uterus to a point where you won't bleed. At least not much. I will keep you updated but in my opinion I would not recommend it. I would go with Para guard perhaps which is hormone free so you will still get periods. Good luck.

My SIL also had really bad cramps and bleeding for 3 weeks before she had it removed. I haven't heard many good things about it!
