Does anyone out there have a copy of this book that they are finished with, and would be willing to pop in the mail to me? I really want to read this book, but am having a hard time tracking down a used copy.
I live in Canada, so if you do too, the postage shouldnt be too much?

I hear touched with fire is a pretty decent book for bipolar

My happy name is "Crazy", someone says your crazy I just say yup, but what is normal? that ususally shuts em up.
My father in-law committed suicide about 5 yrs ago - hanged himself, my husband found him - it was during a very bad period in our lives, but his family do not talk about it. They are Irish, and half are devote Catholics, so by him killing himself, in their eyes he is in pergatory. The other half of the family realize he had severe mental illness and they could see it coming, so depending on who we are talking to, we have to adjust our words carefully...but we dont talk to them much.

hi ha..ha I like that a 'happy name'...so true stay away from the labels...and peoples assumptions of things they know nothing about.

I often think that the labels /names they put on any disorder doesnt help, I am sure they didnt have them as much, and you are right there must be many numbers with the same, keep putting it into google for groups and like minded folks . Change the name , you dont have to have the word' bi polar' the folks who are now called ';Gay ' didnt like the term Homosexual so whilst its still the "real' name most dont use it ,do they these are 'Gay folks , . Find your own 'happy name and use it put the word out , be your own advocate ...
It makes you wonder, back in the 50's and 60's when you had a mental issue, the family either didnt tell anyone, or you were a freak, or schizo, or psyco.
I grew up in a family that hid the mental illness in the family, so when I am asked about it, I can only say what I saw and what I am repeating that my parents did, that wasnt normal.
Maybe with our generation we can open the gates, and get people to admit thier illness (as many dont), and then we can take actions to help others, such as this web site.
Its funny that when I mentioned to my best friend about a few symptoms I suffer from my bi-polar, she would say, oh I have that too, and she said that to more than one symptom of more than one illness. We are very much alike.
I am lucky now that she knows me better than anyone, aside from my spouse, and she doesnt shun me, but relates to what I say. Sometimes its good for a laugh.
I wrote to the MHAO (mental health association of Ontario), to see if I could help in any way, such as charity work, social work etc. They responded that they were setting up a group this fall and they would be in touch. Well I guess they didnt get government approval because it never got off the ground, but I hope one day to be able to help somehow - the word needs to get out there, and when it does, I am sure people will be astounded at the numbers, especially during these financial times.

yes I too am astounded by the ignorance of others especially when it comes to mental health issues....like its contagious!!...what will they ever do when it crops up in their family?....they wouldn't be able to handle it would they.
my husband was physically disabled and suffered the same stares/ rudeness and non compassion from people as well....
whatever our addictions/physical disabilities/ mental disabilities etc may be are we not all supposed to be from the same 'human race'?

I just had a brief look and Amazon has got some , you can get one called 'Bipolar Disorder ' a guide for patients and families for a cent... plus shipping, that happens when they have a lot of them..shipping is media mail and is cheap. also 'Loving someone with Bi Polar ' used from $5.22 ..again Amazon. I am sure there will be more .I will look further tomorrow and PM you any I find ..
I am sorry you got that response some folks get the wrong idea I blame the way many people 'are ignorant of the details of BP. I will check out for you what is out there .and let you know .

Not certain about Canada but I will see if I can find out for you, I always use it , its only for books ...if anyone wants a good cheap book and its not a collectable go to Amazon, put in the book you want, they come up with it plus various prices depending on condition, plus what it would cost in shipping , media is always used unless you want 1st class. If you have a good book you want appraising let me have the title I will appraise it free to my friends or anyone on MH ..

It isnt that expensive on Amazon as we use media mail which is a lot cheaper it will tell you if you ever order anything before you buy it ...If you are sending a book to anyone ask for media mail ...I do it all the time
yes thats what I was looking for too and this sure didn't give any insites to me anyway...very little on how to manage BP.
I am trying to think of others I have read, there arn't many on this topic that are any good anyway.

Thanks for the "heads up" on the book. It doesnt sound like something I would be interested then, I was looking for something, like a biography, but of someone with Bipolar and how they managed it, someone famous. Just easy reading. Oh well, I will keep looking.

If you buy through Chapters Indigo .ca and order $39 or over THEY PAY the postage, so I always wait until I have a bigger order...otherwise shipping is a killer.
I would like to make a comment on this book, I found it very disappointing...the story started when she was very young and to much info abt her growing up and describing her parents/siblings etc...even their house, than went on to in depth writing of her training and degrees.
Most was just useless info...what she did have to say abt her illness was so basic with no real insite that I found very enlightening...
But thats your choice if you still want to read.
