My kid's identity crisis

My kid's identity crisis

My son is 19 and a student at a major university. He's gifted (IQ in the 130 range), but is entirely unmotivated. He has no idea what he wants to do with his life, no major, and has a difficult time even getting up in the morning. He was living alone last semester and dropped out, at which time he underwent personality testing with inconclusive results - the psychologist had never seen anyone with such apathy. He then got together with an old friend from high school as a roommate and went back to school in January. Now he's dropped out again, and all he does is play online video games at all hours, day and night. He does not smoke or take drugs (except Prozac for depression from his primary care doc, which helps a little). He won't even take the initiative to seek counseling, and because he's an adult I have not been able to force him to do so. He has a small trust that he's living on, but that will run out soon.

Any advice would be appreciated

Symptoms of avoiding people acting anti-social or having trouble relating to people can come from depression but they are also part of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. Although only a psychiatrist can make a diagnosis they need to fully understand what's going with him. With schizophrenia antipsychotics are generally needed. Besides talk therapy sometimes group therapy works as well. In addition if he can't work because of his disability applying for SSI for him might be a good idea and when he is ready to return to work there are programs to help people with disabilities return to work. You could find out more at your local independent living center. There's one in every county of every state:

I'm going through something similar actually...I have huge exams at the end of this term and I used to always be  top of the class...for the past three years Ive just been going downhill, I barely even bother going to school anymore, all I ever want to do is stay on the internet or lie in bed....it's rather horrible actually :/
If anybody has any advice on what could help me get more motivated..it would be appreciated...part of me wants to get better

Depends on the cause. You'd have to be more detailed as to the rest of your life. Undermotivation can be a part of depression but I experienced it before recovery from schizoaffective disorder and it can be a part of schizophrenia as well. And other psychiatric disabilities. A psychiatrist could determine what is going on. If you've never spoken to a psychiatrist it would be worth it and if you have in addition to medication talk therapy and sometimes cognitive behavioral therapy can be of help.
