BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER COMMUNITY
can the doctors be wrong?

can the doctors be wrong?

Hi I would be very grateful if anyone could help with advice. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and under mental health services, but I keep having my diagnosis changed. About five years ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as i had extreme highs and extreme lows, but the psychiatrist at the time retired and within five minutes of meeting my new one, my diagnosis was changed to borderline personality disorder. since then it's changed several times and i have even been told i have both? Now i'm worried because i'm due to have my baby girl soon and my mood has gone down quite bad. I have found myself pushing family away because they annoy me by blaming everything on my 'mental health', they forget i am a person i think!. I'm having anxious thoughts that i have to be supermom, i don't want people touching my baby, or taking over, i'm scared that people will take her away. paranoia is horrible and just getting worse as the birth draws closer. I'm not insane at all, but i am concerned that i have gone on such a downer. i feel so sad, no energy, hopeless. Previous to this i had bursts of energy, felt irritated and felt i was going to be supermom, that i didn't need anybody. I am so confused, i don't know what is wrong and my family never listen when they have wronged me, but when i have wronged them, it's rubbed in my face it's my mental health. Any suggestions? Thanks

Its normal to feel like that when you are pregnant, your mood changes and it swings from high to low. I have six children and i have alot of mental health issues but when i was pregnant my mood got alot worse and i got very depressed, i have just been recently told i have a personality disorder. Have you got a therapist you can talk to?
You don't have to be supermon so try not to worry. I didn't like anybody touching my babies after they were born either i just wanted to do everything for them but that only causes more stress so try not to be afraid to accept help from your family.
My partner does that on me as well he seems to forget i have feelings just because i have mental health issues.
Its possible that you can take medication after the birth to help your mood if it is still really low. I know its hard and i feel for you, but i suggest talking to your doctor or psychiatrist and telling them how you feel and that you are afraid, they are there to help.
Sorry if i wasn't much help just wanted you to know that your not alone, i had six children and coped even though i have mental health issues. Take care and good luck

Yes when you are pregnant your moods do shift. After you have the baby you need to becareful of post-pardom depression. If you stick with your doctor, he can help watching you. After my first child I had depression really bad, but they put me on meds and it helped a lot. With my last child I didn't have much depression, so I didn't need the meds. Just becareful and you will be fine!
Oh I have been diagnosed with bi-polar and borderline also.  I think if you went to ten docs you would have ten diagniosises!!! lol
Congrats on your baby!!!

Are you seeing a therapist?  You should probably be having your mood monitored by a health professional.
Having a diagnosis changed regularly can't be very helpful or stabilizing.
The ups and downs make it sound like bipolar but the supermom bit could also be a defense mechanism used by those with bpd.

I would make an appointment to see your doctor or psychiatrist.  The low mood and paranoia is somewhat concerning.

I'm not sure how to advise regarding family.  From my experience they often invalidate and make the situation worse.  Many people are very ignorant about mental illness and many don't even see it as being a legitimate illness.

You might also like to post this question on the mood disorders expert forum.  A doctor may be better able to advise.

Good luck.
