BREAST CANCER: STAGE 3 & 4 COMMUNITY
The Effects of Radiation on Chemo

The Effects of Radiation on Chemo

I'm a stage 4 cancer patient currently being treated with Abraxane & Avastin for cancer that has spread throughout most of my body (my skeletal system, liver, pectoral muscles, etc.). As of this week, I was told I had 3 tumors in the spinal region, one of which has already caused my spine (thoracic region) to curve. Therefore, the doctors want me to start radiation (daily for 2 weeks) in addition to my chemotherapy. In addition, I have been prescribed steroids to reduce the swelling around the tumors in the spinal region. What effects do radiation therapy & the use of steroids have on chemo? Will the radiation enhance the side effects of the chemo? Is it possible for my liver, which is already compromised with cancer, to stop functioning?

Hi.

I believe that the most probable scenario is that the chemotherapy would have an intensifying effect on the effects of radiation treatment.  This phenomenon is called 'radiosensitization'.  Giving chemotherapy drugs along with radiation can make the radiation more effective in killing cancer cells, but this may also increase the likelihood of side effects.  Steroid treatment should not have any significant interaction with radiation treatment and I believe this will be beneficial in controlling the swelling and edema that can be brought about by the radiation.

The addition of radiation is not likely to affect your liver substantially as the beam would be directed towards the spine with the tumors.

Regards.
