15 year old with lumps

I came across this site while trying to research my daughter's problem on the internet.

In September she came to me very worried and said that she discovered two lumps (one in each breast). I made an appointment with her Pediatrician who confirmed that there were two lumps. One was 'egg sized' and the other a little smaller. She reassured us that it was 'highly unlikely' to be cancer but referred us to have a sonar done. Unfortunately I was out of town when the sonar appointment was to take place so my husband took her. She went in on her own and was told that it was 'nothing to worry about' by the nurse. The Pediatrician's office left a similar message on our home voicemail. Upon returning from my trip overseas my daughter told me that she was still very concerned and was not comfortable with the way things were handled. Apparently they only did the sonar of one breast and not both. Added to this my daughter had started to experience shooting pains that would have her bent over in pain. These pains extend from her armpit to the breasts.

I took her back to the Pediatrician's office and saw another doctor who just didn't seem to do a good exam of the breasts for some reason AND never gave us an explination for the pains she was having. She was quick and just said they were almond sized and nothing to worry about. My daughter said she didn't even come close to the big lumps that were the problem to begin with. She went on to say that it's not impossible for teens to get breast cancer, but in her years of being a doctor she's never seen a case yet. I asked her if she could tell us what to do to make sure that this is not the case. She suggested I have her seen by a Gynecologist.

Would this be the correct procedure to follow? I just want my daughter (who will be 16 this Feb) to have peace of mind with this issue. Both my husband and I have lost family members to Cancer...one on each side to breast cancer. As you can see this is a concern for us and we would just like to make 100% sure that our daughter's issue is being taken care of in the right manner.

Hi,
Yes you need to get her properly investigated for a confirmed diagnosis. Has she noticed the lumps in relation to her menstrual cycle? Breast lumpiness, pain and tenderness is common during the menstrual periods due to hormonal fluctuations. Also because of the family history of cancer a proper clinical evaluation and USG is important. See the Gynecologist and get a detailed clinical evaluation done, you go with your daughter to the clinic because she might be hesitant to ask questions. Clear any doubts that you might be having and also ask her if you could get a  repeat USG. Goodluck.
