Axillary Lymph Node

I have just motices a swelling under my arm of about 4cm x 1.5cm, ovel, semi hard and I can move it a few inches side to side. It does not pain. I have had a complete blood count that came back as within normal range.
I have to see a consultant on Thursday but I am really afraid of the potential prognosis. Can anyone tell me how often is aswollen lymph node benign. Every site I search refers to breastcancer???

Hi Zouzi, just got back from clinic, the news is good. I had a mammo and they found two lumps in lymph nodes the largest being 4cm. Then took me for a scan and the doctor said it looks clear and would suggest that she was pretty certain it was a bleed from my breast implant. She has taken a sample from the node and when looking at it she further reaffirmed her original thoughts. She has sent it away for tests to be 100% certain but said in hr opinion it was nothing nasty!!! Final results will take 2 weeks. Can I thank you and this web site for the support it offers but most importantly even whe all the symptoms seem to lead to poor prognosis, with support and  prayers, there is always hope for a good outcome.
Jenny xx

I really would like to answer you about this last question, but I am afraid I don't really know what to say to you, except that one could have more than one swollen gland in the armpit when an infection is somewhere in the body.Hopefully your doctor will be able to clarify all this to you very soon.. Thursday is just around the corner.Best wishes.

I have just felt a second lump that was a lot smaller yesterday but is now as big as the first. Any ideas why it should grow so quick?

Hi Jenny,
Sometimes, even when an infection somewhere in the body is gone, lymph nodes can still take a little  time to shrink back to their normal size.Usually they swell because of an infection. A complete blood count test, indicates whether something significant might be going on (LDH is often elevated in malignancies and AST and ALT are often elevated in infections that cause enlarged lymph nodes). You stated that your complete blood count came back as "within normal range"so I am hopeful that you'll  be okay.My prayers and positives thoughts will be with you on Thursday. Good LUCK and take care...

Thank you for responding, I am so woried, Thursday can't come soon enough.
I would have though a full blood count would have shown any infection? The size is the worry being 4cm but not growing in 2 weeks. The net suggest hard and big is not good.
Thanks again
Jenny

Hi,
An underarm (axillary) swelling or mass symptom described as "Underarm lump" is most likely related to swollen underarm lymph nodes, of which there are numerous causes. Other possiblities include a skin lump that appears under the arm, such as an infected skin follicle in underarm hair.
The cause for the swollen lymph nodes can be virus, bacteria or it can also be an allergy.
Cysts, cancer or even a lipoma( a benign fat tumor) can also be the cause.
There is the possibility that it could be any one of them.Next Thursday your doctor will examine you and take the proper measure to evaluate this swollen lymph node.Best wishes and take care..
