Breast Lump

by olderthanmyage, Jul 02, 2009 02:14PM
I recently found a lump and immediately saw my doctor. I had an ultrasound and mammogram within 5 days. The ultrasound showed a tumor which the radiologist stated "could" be a fibroadenoma. I was set up for a biopsy this wednesday. I have noticed that most people have to wait a few weeks for these test and I am getting them within a day or two. Should I be worried. If the biopsy shows just a fibroadenoma why would I need a lumpectomy like my doctor stated?

Fibroadenomas are benign breast tumors and even though they are sometimes left alone they are also often removed. The wait for testing and results depends on the particular institution; the pt. load, how busy they are, etc. Biopsy results are usually available from 2 to 7 days after the procedure. This may also depend on the type of biopsy performed. Fibroadenomas are removed if they are large enough to cause discomfort and in women over 40 years of age. Keep in mind that a biopsy is the ONLY way to determine the exact nature of any breast lump.    Regards .....
