Breast Cancer and Left-handedness

I read about some studies concerning a link between breast cancer and being left-handed. My grandmother had breast cancer and had a double masectomy. She was a leftie who was forced to write with her right hand by her teacher, as was the custom in her day. I am also left-handed and although my recent mammogram results were normal, I am only 43. She was in her fifties when she was diagnosed. Is there a strong link between being left-handed and breast cancer? If so what is the connection?

Thank you!

and like in China, give up your first born girl for adoption so you can try again, for that only boy! (smile)

my 50/50 comment was typed "tongue in cheek" thinking... well, it's either left or right!

Right? LOL

Seriously .... the biggest indicator you might get breast cancer is if you're female.

I find this hard to believe that there is a correlation, although I know there are other correlations between being left handed and certain traits. For once, if you did a poll asking people who have bc  if they are right handed or left handed, the majority would respond with that they are right handed.

The National Cancer Institute's Fact Sheet "Estimating Breast Cancer Risk," lists 20 or so factors that contribute to heightened risk. Lefthandedness was not among them, so if there is any correlation, it has apparently not yet shown up on the radar screen of the National Cancer Institute...
