How are you? A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast. It can show all areas of the breast, including the area closest to the chest wall, which is hard to study with a mammogram. Breast ultrasound does not use X-rays or other types of radiation and is used to see whether a breast lump is filled with fluid or if it is a solid lump. For most older women, a mammogram will be used together with ultrasound. For women under age 30, ultrasound alone is often sufficient to determine whether an area of concern needs a biopsy or not. Biopsy is important in determining the presence of cancer cells.

NO, the Ultrasound is usually done to define a cyst when a lump or abnormality is seen on Mammogram. Ultrasound can tell if a mass is fluid filled; Mammogram just sees the mass. Only a biopsy can tell if cancer is present within a mass or abnormality.
