Disappearing Lump

When I went for my last mamogram (mammogram) it came back irregular.  I was sent for a ultrasond that found a nodule in my right breast.  When I went to the Surgeon, he said that it was small about a quarter inch and if it was cancer it would be ok because of the size.  He sent me for a biopsy.  When I went for my ultrasound biopsy, they could not find the nodule and sent me home.  When I went to the Surgeon for my followup appointment, he said that since the nodule looked "highly suspecious" he wanted me to repeat the ultrasound in 4 weeks.  I was very happy when they told me that the nodule disappeared and then stressed again when the doctor wanted me to have another ultrasound.  Does this happen often?  What could be the cause?

Hi there.

Breast nodules can form and disappear depending on a person's hormone levels, especially coinciding with one's menstrual cycle.  You probably had fibrocystic disease or fibroadenoma.  This is a benign lesion that comes and goes for some women. However, I agree with your surgeon that you need constant regular exams to see if there would be any new suspicious lesions (the test can be a mammogram or an ultrasound depending on what your doctor feels more appropriate).

Hope this helps.  Regards and God bless...
