Got Free Ultrasound Thanks To Your Posters!

I want to thank those who answered my questions and showed concern for my current situation (see my post titled "SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES LEFT BREAST AREA...CONCERNS?)

I was going to wait until after I was married (this Christmas) to get my Ultrasound (US) once I had insurance through my husband.  After considering the pros and cons, I got off my butt and did some serious research to try to get my US for a lower cost or for free.  I think it was the waiting game and living with not knowing that got to me, for I need piece-of-mind.

I went onto the Susan G. Komen website and called their phone number.  They had many resources where low cost and even free services for women and breast care were available.  It took almost all afternoon but finally I found a hospital about a half hour away that offers those services.  I told her my situation and took my information.  She said it would take less than 2 weeks to get an appointment and she would call me with my appointment time.  I asked her to please tell me how much I can look forward to spending for the US....she told me it was FREE!  I definitly was not expecting that.

I am a happy camper now and I will keep you updated!

Hello

Great news that my US came out that "No abnormalities are seen" on either side.  Also, the radiologist did put something on the report that says "If the patient has not yet had one, a  baseline mammogram would be appropriate for a patient of this age"

I was informed that the hospital that performed the US also has monthly FREE well-women exams and mammograms so I am going to outweigh the pros and cons of getting one.  If not now, possibly get one after all the hooplah of my wedding.  Thanks for all the support!!!!!

Thanks for the advice.  The only reason I would consider having a mammogram is due to the fact that the US was NOT done on the breast in itself.  The US was done in the armpit and across the upper part of the chest 3-4 inches below the collar bone (pectoral area).

If anything, I will consider holding off on the mammogram but not for a year.  Maybe when I get insurance coverage after I am married, I will have a diagnostic mammogram in the beginning of the year.

I shall return with the results when I receive them.

God Bless

That sounds like very good news and I would NOT advise you to continue to investigate at this time. In a year you might consider a Mammogram or another Ultrasound. I say this because I doubt the final report will differ from the opinion at the time of the exam. A Radiologist is always present when Ultrasounds are done and they do see exactly what the technician is seeing on the screen. If your final report comes back with no abnormalities I think you should consider yourself very fortunate and put the matter to rest; at least for now.   Kindest regards .....

Hello everyone

I had my test today and the woman tech was very young (early 20's).  I was able to sit up during the procedure which took only 15 minutes.  I explained to her where I felt the abnormalities and she went straight to those areas with the wand.  Lucky enough, the radiologist was actually in the other room reading the images WHILE she was taking them.  The radiologist did not speak to me but through the tech.   She said everything looked normal 'so far' but had to finish the report.  My GP and myself should have the results in 24 hours unlike the 2-3 day wait I was expecting.

Even thought everything looked ok, the radiologist suggested I should still 'maybe' want to get a mammogram if I still feel questionable or uneasy.  It is up to me to get the script from my doctor.  I found out that the Susan G. Komen Fund will NOT cover a free mammogram if a US or MRI shows everything is ok.  The only way to get one is to have a positive result OR if everything is ok, the radiologist must put on the bottom of the report 'mammogram recommended'.  The tech said she is not sure if the radiologist will do that.

If I get a clean bill of health through the US and the readiologist does NOT put anything on the report, I will go to the local YWCA and see if they can help me get a free mammo. If anything, the mammo can either confirm the US's negative results OR save my life.

Once I get the report, I will go over it here with ya'll and get some imput of the technical terms if need be.

God Bless

UPDATE:

Was getting anxious so I called the clinic yesterday (Monday) and left a message.  She never returned my call so I called again today around lunch time.  She answered the phone and I mentioned who I was.  She did not get to her messages yet (which blew my mind since it was already noon) so I told her how anxious I was and that I had all of the information and was ready to go!  She said she would call me back with an appointment time.  Two hours later she called and told me the earliest is next Tuesday, Aug. 18th at 10:30am.   It will be done at the hospital in their outpatient center.  It will take 3-4 days to get the results.

WISH ME LUCK!

I've had personal experience with the Komen Foundation and continue to work for them at every opportunity; mainly the Race For The Cure every May held in Susan's home town in Illinois. They do wonderful work to be sure. Keep us informed, plese.    Regards ....
