Parenchyma is merely the substance of an organ ... so it is essentially breast tissue. You should follow the recommended re-check in 6 months though. Since this was your baseline (first) mammogram this may have been present for a long time but it's important to do the follow-up to track any changes that might occur. If the 6 month mammo shows no change you will no doubt be able to go back to yearly mammograms. Regards .....
Ok I went back in for the cones compression, they didnt do the US, said no need, well I got the final report today and it reads as follows...
Evaluate a small area of asymmetric density note on mammogram of 8-29-08.
Compression coned down views of the small focal density in the approximate 6 o'clock position of left breast are obtained.
There is a small area of asymmetric density but this appears to represent a small island of breast parenchyma and not an abornomality.
there is no microcalcifications.
Impression; Probably benign
Recommend follow up in 6 months.
BI-RADS 3
so should I be concerns and what is island of breast parenchyma?
Thanks so much!
Many women are called back for additional views after a baseline mammogram. If anything at all is seen on the screening mammogram (as in your case) then further examinations are done to determine exactly what has been discovered. The compression views will zero in on a specific area of the breast ... a magnified view. The Ultrasound frequently follows as this can help determine one finding from another. Different tests see different things and are often used together. The architectural distortion mentioned could be due to scar tissue or a dense area of the breast. Try not to worry too much ... get your additional tests done and get the results; worrying may not be necessary. Kindest regards .....
