Pain in reconstructed breast using silicone inplant and alloderm

Hi, I had double mastectomy October 20th, 2011.  I still have a small seroma in the breast that had cancer in it.  Still have irritable muscle contraction of the inplant after all these weeks.  Does it ever go away.  It can be most painful at times

Morning Sue!

Thanks again for your quick reply!  It feels so good to have this site and you to help me out.  Having double mastectomies, seromas, leaky incisions, complication of post surgical fluid in my lung, horrific vomiting on the first round of chemo has been a draining experience.

Plus I get and injection of Octreotide once a month for Carcinoid Syndrome, another cancer that I had back in 2005 and had a bowel resection for.  On top of that there is the MS.

But through it all, I am grateful and appreciate everyday of my life and those all around me!

In appreciation
Diana

Diana,

Before I had my port installed they performed a MUGA test on my heart. The surgery to install it was outpatient but because the veins they put the port into you would be under anesthesia. Yes, I do have a scar on my chest, about two or three inches down from my shoulder and it's an inch and a half long.

Having a port in your body is creepy in my opinion but my veins shut down the minute they told me I had cancer. There was no way I'd have been able to have chemo through my arm veins.

It's a big decision. Talk it over with your doctor. Best wishes :)

Did they put the port in under local anaesthetic?  Do you have a scar where the port was?  I feel like i ahve so many scars now, whats one more?

As time goes on, my veins even in the crook of my elbow are not working and hurt!  with four more treatments I am not sure what is going to happen.
I will have to ask my GP Oncologist on Monday as next Tuesday is my 3rd Chemo round!

Ouchie is right!

I guess everyone has to make their own decisions about the port.

For me, I hate needles with a passion and when they installed the port I made sure that every blood draw and all chemo went through that port. I couldn't possibly have had chemo through my arm veins.

ouchie. :)

Morning Sue!

My plastic surgeon think muscle on that side is just very irritated and it takes time to heal!  H-m-m-m-m!  Right now my Oncologist doesn't even want me to have the seroma drained as my WBC count was down.  Mind you, the seroma is slowly starting to have less fluid in it.

I don't have a port a cath as I only have 6 rounds of chemo every 3 weeks, but already the veins in my right arm are bad after only 2 rounds!  Plus my veins are iffy anyways.  Maybe it would be worth a chemo port.  I want to be able to go golfing again, but not with ropey sore veins?

Have a great day Sue
Hugs

Diana,

Your pain in the breast is worse now than a month ago? That doesn't sound good at all. What does your surgeon say? Does that have anything to do with the alloderm?

Do you have a chemo port?

Happy New Year to you Sue!

Thank you for your reply!  I guess it takes time for our bodies to accept all these foreign bodies such as implants and alloderm.  Of course I always have some concern when the pain is more intense than a month ago as I ahve a tendency to think of recurrence as the left breast with the cancer in it has been giving me grief since the mastectomy, seromas, more pain, contractions, etc.  Its kind of weird as it will lasts for a few days and then calm down.  Just when you think everything is on the mend, the pain rears its ugly head.

the other question I have is really sore vein where the chemo was put in.  OUCH

Hi Diana,

As you know I had DIEP reconstruction using my own tissue so my information is coming to you second hand from a friend who has implants. She said she had issues for a few months as well. I think you'll find that things calm down pretty quickly from this point forward. At least I'm hoping so for you :)

Have a healthy New Year my friend.
