Fibroadenoma

I am a forty-nine year old woman with a strong family history of breast cancer and a personal history of atypical ductal hyperplasia.  I have had annual MRIs since age 43.  This year MRI showed a new 13x14 mm nodule that on core biopsy was a fibroadenoma.  Given my age and history, should this be surgically excised?  If so, why?

Hi,
A fibroadenoma if asymptomatic is usually manged by observation and regular follow ups. But it is surgically excised if it causes pressure symptoms or is large or disfiguring. Do follow up with your doctor regularly and you need not worry. Goodluck.

Hi,
Smiles must be adorning your face after the report.
Fibroadenoma is abenign tumour. A 49 year old female with fibroadenoma  can wait for surgical intervention till it is problematic. But in your case, a positive family history makes you a candidate of high risk nature and hence a excision biopsy  is advisable. This is would further allay all other fears. It Can also be managed with strict checkup and screening protocol.
