nodular density found

I'm 35 with 3 young children and just told that a nodular density in the left breast was found on my 1st ever mammogram.  I am to be scheduled for a follow-up Mamo and perhaps ultrasound in a few weeks.

Back in 2004 had a blocked milk duct in the same breast and had an ultrasound taken at that time.  Could this just be calcification from 2004?  Should I be more worried because of the follow-up mamo so quickly or is it standard procedure?

Hi,

You can clear your doubts here or with your doctor. This is to help you decrease your anxiety. You need to try to relax and calm down.

A clinical examination has already been done with a screening mammogram. You would now be advised a diagnostic mammogram where only the suspicious area will be targeted mostly. After that an ultrasound would be done depending on the mammogram findings.

An ultrasound helps to differentiate a solid lesion from a cystic lesion and also helps in site localisation.

After these, depending on the reports a further management plan would be decided.

Most probably a needle aspiration would be done to get a confirmed diagnosis by sending a few cells from the site to the lab for examination. this is a safe, OPD procedure.

But you need to take it step as it comes, and not worry about so much ahead in time, right now.

Just try and stay calm. Talk to your doctor, your family and friends for support.
Do keep us posted about your progress.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Not sure if I posted this response correctly the first time so here it is again:

Thank you for your advice.  I'll be honest and say that I am still worried though and will be holding my breath until everything is over.

Can you please inform me of what to expect as far as further testing?  Will the results of the diagnositic mamo determine if I will have an ultrasound?  What can an ultrasound determine?  What could the next steps be after the ultrasound?

Thanks!

Hi,

It could be the blocked milk duct picked up on mammogram.

Do not worry, this is normal procedure to go in for a diagnostic mammogram in case something abnormal comes on the screening mamogram.

Do discuss your past history with your doctor, and ask for a copy of the mamogram and ultrasound reports.

Do keep us posted about your progress.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
