At my yearly exam with my gynocologist, my doctor felt a large mass in my right breast.  She immediately sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound (which showed nothing) and then to see a breast surgeon.  Once he felt the mass, he had me go for a MRI.  The MRI report stated this:  Right Breast - asymmetric parenchymal enhancement of right upper outer breast as compared to the left.  This may explain the palpable finding on physical examination and most likely represents some benign asymmetric enhancement.  Left Breast - two enhancing nodules at left upper breast 12 o'clock position and subareolar breast posteriorly near the chest wall.  The imaging characteristics and enhancement curve are most consistent with a benign etiology such as small fibroadenomas.  The MRI doctor recommended a biopsy on my left breast and possible biopsy on my right breast if the surgeon felt it was needed.  He also recommended another MRI in 6 months.  Here's my problem and question:  I am TERRIFIED of needles and originally was going to wait on the biopsy until I had another MRI in 6 months (the surgeon said that would be o.k.).  However, after reading the MRI report myself, I'm not so sure.  The MRI doctor wrote that these lumps were "probably" and "most likely" benign.  Should I have the biopsy now, and if so, should I push to have it done on the right breast, too?

I was SO terrified that I did wait.  They thought my lump was a lactating adenoma, surgeon agreed.  We waiting 4 months and checked again.  If I did it again, would I do the biopsy immediately?  Nope.  I got a beautiful second daughter out of it.

Should you wait?  If you aren't comfortable waiting, then get the biopsy, insist on it.  Fear not the needles if you need to know.  Those needles aren't so bad (my biopsy hurt a bit, but my mom said hers did not, go figure).  It was nothing I couldn't get through again, if I had to.  I hope to never have to.  If your doc is comfortable with waiting, and you trust your docs judgement, then ask if he'll see you in three months for a check.  If it grows, then biopsy immediately.  Three months is not too long in the scheme of things.  But, YOU must be comfortable with the decision.  Darcytwin is right, the peace of mind may be more important than putting off the uncomfortable.  And some of us do have some WILD imaginations!!!!!

There is no better time than the present...I know I couldnt wait that long without fear building up in me...needles or not, peace of mind is always better than a mind wild with what ifs....
