cyst rupture

by Missybaby554, Sep 08, 2009 12:02PM
My mother was told that she had 3 cysts on her right breast, 1 of which was "ruptured"?? this one was said to be cancerous due to the fact it was bloody.  She was also told she had two calcifications on the left breast 1 of which she was told was cancerous.  I'm a bit confused by this, could someone please tell me what all of this means?  (She's had a mammogram and biopsies.)  Also, as of yet out of the 4 or so doctors she's seen beginning with the General Practitioner, not one has sent her for any bloodwork, doesnt that seem like that should've been one of the first things done?  I am very concerned for my mom, could someone pleas help??

Blood work really has essentially nothing to do with the discovery of Breast Cancer. If your Mother has been diagnosed by biopsy then she certainly should be proceeding with some form of treatment such as surgical removal of the lesion followed by an Oncology consult to formulate a treatment plan such as Chemotherapy and/or Radiation and possibly hormone therapy if the cancer were found to be hormone receptor positive. There may be some form of blood work before and during Chemotherapy to track the response of the tumor to the treatment.     Regards .....

Thank you for responding.....   She is  going to an Oncologist today for more information, all that she was told was told to her by her surgeon.  They recommended that she have the right breast removed and a lumpectomy on the left breast.  I am concerned with the term "ruptured" cyst.  Do you know what that means?  Does it mean that cancer is now spreading?  Sorry if I am asking stupid questions but I am just very worried about my mom.

It simply means that the cyst has burst and it doesn't necessarily mean that the cancer is spreading ...... the fluid may have spread in the breast and that is no doubt why a mastectomy was recommended as well as the fact that there are 3 cysts in that breast. If the cancer were to spread it would involve the lymph nodes and they will be sampled at the time of surgery. NO, you are not asking stupid questions ..... the only question that I term "stupid" is the one that goes unanswered so keep asking ..... that's what we are here for.    Keep us posted after your Mother sees the Oncologist ....   Regards
