hypoechoic mass

I just went for a mamaogram on 8/8/08 and it was good. 2 weeks ago I discovered a large lump upper left inner quadrant left breast.  There is a irregular soft tissue mass 3.5X3X2cm.  This was further evaluated by an ultrasound. They called it an irregular hypoechoic mass 2.4X1.8X1cm remainder of the breat was normal.  I will be getting a biopsy should I be very scared.  Is this common I am 49 yrs old.

Hi bears4

Our dx is identical.  I too was dx'd with hypoechoic mass on Aug 8 2008.  They asjked me to do a 6 mth folllow-up and that's when they decided to do a surgical core needle biopsy beascue it still looked like something they didn't need to worry about.  My pathology came back and it was DCIS with minute IDC.  All indicatations are that with lumpectomy and radiation this is totally treatable and curable.   If you google DCIS you will find that some sites even asy that this is a pre-cancerous lump.  In my case the IDC (Invasive Ductal Carcinmoma) means it has spread out of the duct.    this too I am told is treatable adn curable.  I just had my surgery and my lymph nodes are thankfully negative.  I am now awaiting my detailed patholgy report post-surgery.  I am hoping for node negative results so I don't have to do chemo or tamoxifen.  My initial pathology out of the OR said my sentinel nodes are negative.  Good luck sister, we're gonna be ok.

had core biopsy yesterday and mri waiting for the doctor to call me.  The biopsy takesa couple of days.  When he first examined me he said he didnt like it he was worried he doesnt like the way it feels but did say after repeating the mamo or ultrasound it looks better than it feels.  I'm hoping they didnt miss this on the mamo 6 months ago.  It is at the top of my breast.  It literally came out of nowhere I always check myself.  On pins and needles.

According to the report the first measurement was from the digital mamogram and the second was the ultrasound.  Since this lump is very high up I'm wondering if they missed it 6 months ago on the old mamagram.  Going tomorrow for my biopsy. thanks.

To have appeared in such a short time after a "clear" mammogram it could likely be either a cyst or Fibroadenoma. Fibrocystic Breast Condition is fairly common among women. I don't quite understand the difference in the two sizes you mention. I'm curious how the first measurement was obtained .... was ultrasound the only test done ?? The size stated by US is 1 cm smaller overall  than the previous stated size. The biopsy will settle the question as to the nature of the mass. Waiting's the worst, isn't it ??    Good Luck .....
