Worried

Please help me, I am a mother of four young children and am totally devastated regarding a mammogram I had taken two days ago, the doctor gave me my results immediately and told me that it showed urgency, so now I am waiting in fear to see the specialist.  The Mammogram and ultrasound showed lots of microcalcifications - some were with asterix, a cyst which I know about, but it has changed, a nodular lesion, fibroids and I think ganglions.  The doctor told me that one breast was diseased.  I live in Portugal, so the report is in Portuguese and I can only disipher some.  The staff have all tried to reassure me that there is nothing alarming in the report, but it seems to me that there is, and as I lost my mother to breast cancer and having had four children at an older age, it seems to me that I am one of the most likely candidates.  Please help, I am so frightened, especially for my children

Hi,
Well you have to be strong and prepare yourself mentally to handle this. The most important thing is the belief that all will eventually fall into place. Wait for the biopsy results to come in. And take some family member or friend with you to the doctor so that both of you can understand in detail what your doctor is trying to explain. Also clear any doubts that come to your mind. This will help you deal with the situation in a better way. Biopsy is a safe procedure and you dont have to worry. Goodluck.

Hi, thanks for your reply, you were right, I have to go in for a biopsy of a lump under surgery, also the doctor said they will investigate the pleomorphic microcalcifications, the other lumps seem to be cysts, milk dried in one, and something else which I cannot remember as I totally lost all sense of what was being told to me during the consultation - I am petrified as I cannot stop thinking of my children and what the outcome may be.  I hope you are well and thank you again.

Hi,
The mental turmoil you are going through right now is surely a lot. But you have to reassure yourself and weigh all the possibilties and what are the options you have. You will have to be strong and face the situation with much needed courage.
Well the negative signs in your case are - a family history of breast cancer, elderly motherhood, and most importantly the mammography report. The lesions you describe are multiple- microcalcifications, cyst, ganglion, fibroids. You should consult a specialist at the earliest and see what he has to say. A biopsy would help you tell whether the lesion is benign or malignant and so would an MRI. Discuss with your physician what he thinks would be the best modality for you. The treatment options would vary depending on the type of lesion. You have to anyways start preparing yourself for a surgical procedure on the advice of your physician.
