I was given BIRAD 4b and had biopsies taken 3 weeks ago. They took 5 samples, and the anesthesia hurt a bit going in, but then it was ok. Mine were done while in mammogram to find the right location - stereotactic, and although I was also quite anxious, I do think its best to just try to be calm.
I still have a little residual bruising and a area that is a lump where they took the samples. I went by myself, and my husband was able be there (travels a lot) in time for the results. But it is getting better everyday. I got the results in three days, and am ok, but follow up in six months. For me being out and about in a city, I ended up wearing two bras for a few days just to avoid jostling and our of fear of being bumped.
I read that some hospitals will give you small ice packs to put in your bra. I wish I had found this earlier, Ice was helpful, and if I need to do this again, I will find some small gel type ice packs that i can manage easier.
Hope all goes easily with a good outcome for you.
Hi,
Not being familiar with this procedure can be intimidating and I can certainly understand how you feel, but try to stay calm…. Core needle biopsy is a simple procedure that usually goes smoothly without any complication. It is performed under local anesthesia…. You will hear a clicking sound as the samples are being taken and may feel some pressure, but should not feel pain. If during the procedure you do feel pain, let the Radiologist know immediately so he/she can administer more numbing medication. The procedure usually takes a few minutes and no stitches are required.
When I had my biopsy, the nurse showed me how the biopsy gun works so I could be familiar with that 'click' noise.. I felt a little pain when the numbing needle was inserted but after that, I couldn't feel anything. The whole process from start to finish takes about an hour. Before the procedure do not take aspirin because it thins the blood. After the procedure your breast might be a little sore and, if needed, you could take some over the counter pain killers. Also applying ice packs for a couple of days is very important to minimize pain, bruising and swelling.
Waiting for the results is the hardest part, but try to keep busy as much as possible so the waiting time will seem much shorter.
Wishing you all the best and hopefully your biopsy results will reveal “Benign findings”
