what is the best choice to have a local or general anesthia for my breast surgical excision? I heard that general anesthis has side effects and not safe...is it true?

Hi Danti
I had excisional biopsy in August and chose to be completely asleep,  for me that was less stressful than core biopsies I had in November being totally awake and nervous!  Wishing u all the best,
Cindy

Thanks so much NC- GOD BLESS YOU- YOU have a big  heart...
Yes I'll talk to my anesthesia about my concern, And I hope he'll do it best for me! This is my 2nd excision- it's atypical papillary lesion... that's why a surgical excison is recommended! I got the same apl 4 years ago, I was not stressed out as much as this time... probably b/c of gettng older and getting chickener...lol! and I hope it's not cancer when it's tested after...
Happy holidays NC AND I'M WISHING ALL THE BEST, TOO!

Just wanted to add that I agree with japdip 100%! I've had three excisional biopsies/lumpectomies and they were way easier than I anticipated! Obviously, you need someone to drive you home and keep an eye on you for a few hours, but I think you'll be glad you chose the IV sedation. I can take pain pretty well (I've had some major surgeries) but only AFTER the procedure. I can't stand the thought of being totally awake and conscious of someone doing something potentially painful to me---I get really freaked out. And I know when doctors say, "This won't hurt" there's no guarantee!!!And a freaked out patient is not what a surgeon needs either---they want you relaxed and painfree if at all possible.Take japdip's advice and talk it over with your surgeon. Don't be afraid to tell him/her exactly how you feel--they'll listen and try to make it as easy as possible on you. For instance, I got my doc to prescribe just a little Valium for the night before and morning of the procedure and it helped me sleep and relax a lot. Like you said, we already have enough stress on us, so whatever modern medicine can do to relieve some of it, I'd take it!
I can't tell from your original post if this is a biopsy or excision of a known cancer. But I'm wishing you all the very best!
Hugs,
nc

thanks Japdip- god bless you and happy holidays!
Yeah, I was thinking a moderate iv sedation and local is a better choice for me... as you said I'd not be aware of anything during the procedure is good cuz I 'm tired of dealing w/ stress to know what's going on-- I love sleeping IF I GET A CHANCE...LOL!

Of course any degree of General Anesthesia would have side effects but these days it would be rare. By general for an excisional biopsy it would be more of a case of IV sedation type of anesthesia. I doubt that even with a lumpectomy a local would be advised. IF however this were the case I'm sure there would also be the addition of some IV sedation which would mean that you would not be aware of anything that occured during the procedure. This is a decision that would be best made between you and your Surgeon and perhaps the Anesthesiologist who would be present even with the local and IV sedation. Regards ....
