tamoxifen and side effects

by Molly2828, Jun 29, 2009 11:41AM
I have stage one breast cancer that is estrogen receptive.  I'm taking radiation and am questioning whether or not to take tamoxifen.  I'm concerned about side effects, in particular possible retinal changes in the eyes.  I've had cataract surgery and am bothered with floaters (I was very near sighted) and I know I'm already at some risk for retinal detachment.  The last thing I want is to add to that risk.  I'm 72 years old and in good health.  I'm wondering if I should take tamoxifen or, if not that, an aromatese inhibitor.  But they pose risks of bone loss and I already have some.  So, I
don't know what to do.

At your age I doubt it would be Tamoxifen. This particular drug is usually prescribed to women who have not reached menopause. You might be put on one of the other drugs with the same action. Keep in mind that most of these drugs do have side effects but not all persons will experience them. You might have a serious discussion with your Oncologist about these drugs and weigh the risks against the benefits of this type of therapy.    Regards ....
