Hi. With astrocytomas, it really is very difficult to excise the entire mass, because the tumor has a propensity to branch out and tunnel into the surrounding brain tissue. There is a drug which is now available called temozolomide, which is very effective at controlling the spread of this tumor. However, this drug is still not a cure for astrocytoma. Eventually, the tumor will grow back at some point, and has to be treated again by re-surgery or with radiation.
