How do I stop my kitten from biting my face while I’m asleep?

Hello. I have a kitten who is 5 months old. I got him the day after he was born so we are very bonded. He loves to sleep with his front paw over my neck and his little face on my face. It’s so sweet. But lately when he wakes up, he starts biting my face. Sometimes it really hurts. I don’t think he’s trying to hurt me. I think he’s either trying to wake me or just being affectionate. But I wondered if you have any suggestions on how to get him to stop. I don’t want to stop havine him sleep with me. But if he is trying to wake me, he is getting rewarded for bad behavior b/c it works. I don’t get up and feed him right away when he does this b/c that would send the wrong message.

Put a spray bottle of water by your bedside. When Fangs wakes you up in the am in his adorable little way, spray his face. He'll take your meaning in only two or three days.

Either that or just a wet washcloth, and wipe his little mug when he tries it.
