Cat may have ingested 400 mg of Ibuprofen

Hi there,

I just found a cracked shell of a 400 mg Ibuprofen tablet (Advil) on the floor. Seems one of my cats may have chewed on it. Not sure if any was ingested. Also not sure when this took place, but I vacuumed yesterday so probably in the last few hours. They have been eating and seem fine, no vomiting or diarrhea. They are sleeping right now but do react when I prod them.

They are both 2 years old, and very small, likely 2-3 pounds each.

I am very worried and love them dearly, but I am a student so cannot afford an emergency vet visit unless necessary (today is a holiday so my regular vet is closed).

Your advice is very helpful!
Charlotte

Also, if your cats only weigh 2-3 pounds, they are severely underweight.  Most kittens reach that weight by the the time they are 3-4 months old and still growing.  Even a small boned adult cat should weigh 6+ pounds.

Cheaper than the vet is the Pet Poison Control hotline.  Plus, there are resources on this site that may help you:

As another alternative, on your bottle should be a number to call in case of overdose. Although they primarily help humans, they might have guidelines for animals as well.

Chances are the medication will taste terrible to a cat so they wouldn't ingest much. But toxicity works so different for those critters that it is definitely worth a phone call at least.
