Grandpa Cat loosing hair like crazy

Hi there.. I have this cat that has lived around our house for a long time, we have taken in many strays that we have come across over the years, but this is the oldest cat we have still alive. I didn't notice at first but when I went to check on them one day, since they live out side i usually check on them whenever they come around,  I noticed his hair was thinning really bad... then I didn't see him for a long time and the next time I saw him he was ragged with loose fur and he looked terrible, skinny and frail. One day when I was in the house one of my sisters told me she had seen him out side and he looked like he was going to die, I went out there and he just cried at me. It made me feel so sad. Any way It looked like he had been paralyzed on half of his body. he tried to get up but part of him just dragged. I took some blankets and made him comfortable, figuring he didn't have long to live but after a week or so He was up and going again. He has been running around as usual but he is nearly bald. Any body know what could cause this behavior? If it is a disease what kind of disease?  Any help is appreciated thank you!

Yes.. That is very true. Animals are very special things. And Some times I do feel like inventing a carrier for humans hahaha. It might help the little boy think about how animals feel a little bit.
I went to check on the cat last night and he was underneath our storage unit.. I could see him but It is hard to get under there because of how small the crawl space is.. I suppose he was just trying to get some shade from the heat of the day. He didn't look too well, I think that he is getting that disease again, The one he had before where he could only walk a few steps without falling over.
I Talked to my little sister, to confirm if she saw the neighbor boy hurt the cat, and she said that She thinks Rue (My little brother) Is telling a big story. It could be true.. but He does have a way of making every thing sound a little bigger than it is.
I hope the cat will be ok. I was watching him for about 5 minutes under the storage unit last night and it looked like He had really deep labored breathing so  i Didn't know how long he would have to last. I will check on him later today and see how he is doing. Thank you for your help :) It is greatly appreciated

You can try the SPCA and local animal shelters (ask them for references).  You could also try a Google search to find someone who can treat him.  Shaving him would be a good idea although some cats really struggle with this.  You might need another person to help you.  Also, if you've looked at his teeth, they should give you an idea about his age.

If he's still alive, that's a good thing.

The kid who hurt the cat sounds like a nasty one.  HE should be put in a carrier.

I agree with Salas.  I have never heard of an animal declaring war, committing rape or murder (except for food)  Those are all human characteristics.

Usually there are organizations in an area that will help out. Your best bet is to check with the local ASPCA or shelter for any info on low/no pay services.

If he's still alive today that's a good sign. How does he seem to be doing today?

I'd keep an eye on the kid. hurting animals is an early sign of someone being on their way to become a merry little sociopath. Don't be surprise if he starts nicking other folk's belongings from the neighborhood and lying about it.
It makes me wonder what the parents are like.

Personally, I think the value of human life is over related.  We've got no more or less a right to either life or to kill than other creatures do.

Thanks for the suggestions, It might be a good idea to shave him. I don't want to take him to the vet very bad.. But I do want him to get better. If I took every cat we have to the vet I would go bankrupt. haha We have over 15 cats that have come along. Most of them are from the original ones that We first took in, they were wild babies, But this is the third gerneration now.. Most of the others are tame.. we have a few that are quite wild though. I will see what I can do for the old boy. Do you know of a Vet who is workable and Will take a payment plan, If He needs lots of treatment, So I don't have to come up with the money up front? (In Hurricane or St. George, Utah Preferably) Thank you for any help :)

We have a cat who is 23 yrs old - he's an Old Man.  We shaved his hair because he is a DLH and getting matted; however, his hair is growing back despite his age.  I defer to Savas here because I'm not an expert on cats but the cat you found might not be an Old Man.  Our Old Man has bad muscle tone but he can run faster than the younger cats when he hears his food dish being filled.  I do agree about the carrier if you can get him in it.  We usually cover them with a blanket first; cats are worse to handle than dogs IMHO.

The poor little guy was probably abandoned.  I can't remember if you said he was neutered or not but sometimes with a good vet and caring people around animals can heal just fine.  Sometimes they can't - those are the sad times.  Personally, I think animals are as important as humans beings, maybe even better.  But that's a topic for another time.

If you take him to a vet and can't afford treatment some vets will let you surrender the cat and the vet's clinic will take care of him and often adopt him out for a small fee.  If  you take him to be euthanized, you might end up paying the bill.  If you surrender him, the vet can determine whether or not the cat needs treatment or euthanasia.

I wish you and the cat well.

Hi... Thank you for your help. I will see what I can do about getting it to a vet. Yes.. animals are important but Not as important as human beings. People should be punished for cruelty to animals but Not be put to death just because they hurt one. I hope That they will Learn their lesson. I have almost learned mine... I guess I just need to learn how to keep the cats in the yard.. it's hard, specially when they are males. It reminds me of our other neighbors. We use to have some little boys that lived next door that took delight in tourchering animals to death. Well... sadly one of our cats (A mother of 4 or 5 at the time, that were still too young to take care of them selves) was one of thier victims. After that, I have had a HATE that I cannot describe every time I see an animal even being held the wrong way. My Sister and I raised the kittens from then on and Most of them lived. The mother cat that died was completly gray,... And those are usually quite rare, around here anyways. Those neighbors don't live by us any more, to my utter delight.  :) Well.. Thanks for all your help.

(Sorry, away for the weekend)

I'd suggest putting him in a carrier with food and water. If you can take him to a vet, it would likely be a good idea. (I'm still guessing it was a hyperthyroid issue).

If you can't take him to the vet, leave him in a dim room with some food and water (yes, he likely won't eat) and see if there's any change.

I have some ideas what you can do to the little monster that did this, but they're all very illegal so I won't post them here.

But I'm a firm believer in the death penalty for people who are consistently cruel, rude, or generally a social parasite. Some people either can't be saved or aren't worth saving. It's not punishment, it's the equivalent of taking out the trash.

Personally, I'd take the family of the little monster to court. It's a sad fact that pets are considered property, but at least you can hit them in the wallet. If you do take your cat to the vet, you can document the visit and THEY'LL end up paying the bill.

That will make them think twice about letting little Billy out of his cage unwatched.

If you decide to pursue it, let me know. It's small claims court, and fairly easy to do.

Hi.. I guess your last response didn't come through. Anyway It looks like that I will probably be putting The Old Boy down. One of the neighbor boys Thought he would be cute, and hit him in the abdomen with a wrist strocket. Now... when he gets up to run he just falls over side ways, when he gets back up, he can run for about 2 seconds then he falls over again. It is pretty sad to see, I think they might have hurt him internally or something. I don't want to have to have him put down, but He looks like he is pretty bad. any suggestions?

The cat has got in fights a lot with the neighbors tom cat (Our cat is fixed)  It has lot's of scares on it, specially where the hair is falling out. I noticed that the neighbors tom cat is also loosing his hair quite badly and I wonder if it's a disease that can spread from one cat to another. His skin isn't really red, it's just mostly scared. I have gotten ring warm from a cat before and I don't think this cat has wring warm... He is just going clear bald. His skin is just gray like normal, I haven't noticed any red spots though.  Thank you. :)

most any dewormer you get at the pet store should be good. They tend to all be about the same. The trick is to pick one you can get into your cat easily. That depends on who handle-able your at is. :)

What does kitty's skin look like? Is there any obvious pattern or redness? I forgot to ask; ringworm causes hair loss as well, but there's usually an obvious circular reddish skin coloring to the balding areas.

Thank you for your advice... I am kind of in the tooleys and I usually treat animals the best I can if I can. The last resort is to call the vet because they have to travel out here, Unless I take him to town with me. What kind of De- wormer would you recommend? I can get some and try it when I go into town next time... and see if that works. I'll keep an open mind on what it might be so if that doesn't work.. I am ready for more suggestions :) Thank you very much!

It sounds like it could be a parasite infestation. If you can touch him, I'd start by treating him for mange. Unfortunately, there are likely other parasites that are also a problem. I don't suppose you can get the old guy to a vet, or at least worm him yourself?

Being an older cat I'd actually go with a thyroid issue. It's treatable, but it will require a vet visit. The symptoms you describe fit that illness, but remember, there are others it could possibly be.
