Hairball --> constipation

Hey My Cat People.

I know I should remember these things but I don't.

Spike has symptoms of having a hairball I think and he has trouble tonight defecating.  By the looks of his several attempts in one of his litter boxes he's getting some out with lots and repeated efforts but he's not through.  He won't take cat lax or laxatone.  He will eat only the tiniest bit of butter.

He just had a great checkup and senior blood work results.  Is there a Hills Diet without prescription that I can get him?

  What to do?

Thanks & Blessings,
  Melinda

Try petroleum jelly on your finger.  All of our cats have liked that.

Calamity Jane (of fond memory), if we had trouble locating her in the house, a twist off of the lid to the jelly jar and there she was.  She loved the stuff as must as she did roast pork or people tuna.

Pip and Opus,

Thank you both for your sound advice.

Spike won't take the petroleum jelly at all.  We tried catnip flavored lax and he wondered who would do such a heinous thing to something as wonderful as catnip.

   He is feeling better.

We are trying crunchy munchies, a combo for sensitive stomach and hairball relief.  One is Hills and I don't remember who makes the other.

Spike swears he only eats canned food, Fancy Feast, I know...  He eats crunchies on the sly though.  I know this boy.

So, I'm not the best kitty mom in the world but I try.  My spouse and I aren't in charge, we get punished by a look shot to at least maim by brother or sister or a constant crying, pawing from Spike or a squeak from the moors of the Baskervilles by Sookie.

   We are whipped.

Blessings,
    Melinda

Pip is right a little of the white petroleum jelly is the same as giving the laxatone or others just not flavored. you can also try putting just a little mineral oil on her wet food, not alot and not always just occasionally....oh and Hill's prescription diet doesn't require a prescription if thats what you meant, its just a name..good luck
