actually i did do the whole introduction post and the only one that replied was opus. oh well it is what it is. ty for welcoming me
Aw, I'm sorry maaskant. Rest assured we are Very happy to have you join our community. I saw Opus sent you a personal note of welcome, even. And although we are happy to see any new member join us, most people don't announce themselves the way Sonrissa did (although I wish they would)...which naturally invited more welcoming posts than the average newcomer.
Again, so sorry your feelings got hurt, honey! Big Hug, Maaskant; it's great to have you!!! :)
well it sure looks like you got a warmer welcome than i did lol.
Hi Sonrissa! So glad you found us and welcome!!
I too had that expensive blood test done for Jade to dx herpes, and yes, poor girl has it severely. After using the expensive Viralys (full of additives I might add) sold at the vet, I decided to order online. It is a pure powder with NO additives, which is what you want.
I just started her on Lysine 6days ago. I think I see an improvement already as the herpes outbreaks show in her eyes the most. If you buy Lysine online, it is very inexpensive. Myself or Opus can give you a link. Wait, let me scroll up to see if Opus gave it to you already. Yes, she did. I bought the powder from Carlson Labs. So far, Jade doesn't seem to notice it on her food, and I am pleased with her reaction to it. She is acting like her tummy is upset, so I'm skipping a day to see if the Lysine is the problem.
Anyway, good luck to you, and happy you're here! :)
p.s. FIP = Feline Infectious Peritonitis....something I don't know much about.
Hi and thank you so much for the info on the L-lysine! Mt vet sold some vitamins with that! They are very expensive! I will Definately check out that link!
What is FIP? Vet told me the Interferon was to boost his immunity to fight the herpes virus? I had an expensive blood test done on Frasier and everything was within normal levels!
Frasier (and all of them ) eat 1 3oz can of Fancy Feast wet food and 1/2 cup of Iams weight control, indoor, hairball, dry food! Plus about 5 cat treats per day! Frasier does have a bit of a weight problem! Not too bad says vet!
Thank you so much for the advice and information! Much appreciated!
me again, I just re-read my statement....that L-lysine is as effective as an antibiotic...actually its MORE effective b/c its meant as a booster to the immune system besides antibiotics are NOT effective at all for virus's...thats a waste of money if thats what he was given them for....
interferon is a protein that interferes with viral replication....it is used commonly for FIP I hope Frasier doesn't have this!!

hi... ...Sonrissa for the herpes virus you can use a human supplement that comes in powder form...mixes in with the food and has very little or no taste that I'm aware of, most Vets prescribe this(in the more expensive pet formula of course) its an amino acid called L-lysine. this will help as much as an antibiotic for the allergy like symptoms. I will give you a link to order it online. you can also buy it from any good health food store, however this is the safest one for cat use....sugar,salt,soy,corn,wheat and preservative FREE..important!! 500mg for first week, 250 thereafter...

like I mentioned before, its likely food allergies that are causing her to be so itchy....are you feeding a dry grain based diet??????
Awwww Sara! I'm so very sorry about your boy! I've been there and it is beyond tough! Wish I lived closer to you as I could "loan" you my sweet Hazel! She loves to climb in my lap and comfort me! She sleeps close and kneads on me all the time! Take care, hope your find some comfort soon! I remember you helping me when my Fred "enjoyed" the 4th of July fireworks! "smile"!
Hi Sonrissa and Bkitty!!
This forum has been a godsend for me these last few months, especially recently when i had to say goodbye to my beloved boy. I only had him and right now my heart needs to mend before i can even think about adopting one. The people here are so kind and caring, you will never feel alone~~
Oh yes, I forgot to add, the vet has diagnosed Frasier with allergies and Herpes virus! He had been on anti-biotics! Just wanted to add that!
Hi Opus! Thank you! Frasier has been prescribed Chlorpheniramine for sneezing and runny nose! It works great when I can get it down him! I've tried everything, including pill pockets and as I said cans of real tuna! I've even tried shoving them down his throat and that is awful for both of us!
Also Frasier has been prescribed Interferon, which I've been told is an immune stimulant! This, he takes just fine as it liquid, and tasteless! I appreciate any help and advice you may have!
I already love this community and so happy I found it and you all!
Resident Cat-dude here;
My family had a kitty before I was born in 1957 and there have been some years where there was no cat in the house, maybe 11 out of the 55 I've been around. =)
Many family members have cats, too.
Currently, my wife and I have 3 Hildie, Chessie and Teia. We lost Kessie (Hildie's older sister) to lymphoma last month. So, we're usually a 4 cat house.
Good bunch of folks here, lots of knowledge and even more compassion, even when their own beloved little friends are sick.
Welcome!
Pip
Hey Bkitty! I just wanted to say that I find myself meowing at the walls on occasion! Ha Ha Ha!! Thanks!
Welcome!! I too have cats,,5 of them. They range in age from 10months to 17yrs old! I have all boys and they are my babies too! My 17yr old kitty is senile but happy, and healthy ( other than meowing at walls and stuff-LOl) and the baby is a handful! There is great support and information on this site! My second oldest kitty has PICA and eats weird things,,easter grass, barbie babies & shoes and most recently the cap off a H2O bottle and more pictures. The middle two boys are normal-Thank God! And the baby, Gizmo, is full of energy and mischief! He has become our little pak-rat! They too are spoiled rotten and are fat, happy and content! They are good eaters that is for sure! These people here have supported me thru several hospital stays and vet trips! I love them all to death! Again, Welcome!!~Bkitty
what medication are you giving Frasier? the best way to give meds is to either get them from a compound pharmacy(thru your Vet) that way if avail. comes in a gel form and you just need to swab on his outer ear....or if not avail that way and if its a capsule..open the capsule..mix with a tiny amount of water and give via a dropper or syringe...cats are just too good at detecting anything that messes with their food.
btw....there is tons of info on feline allergies that I can point you too...the most common allergen is grain in the diet...or chicken.
what does Frasier eat?
Thank you so much for the warm welcome! I'm excited to be here and happy to have found this home! Yes, all my boys and girls are "fixed" and microchipped! The only real issues I have is my oldest, Frasier, has terrible allergies! He sneezes and itches constantly! I do have allergy pills for him, but it is a constant battle trying to get him to eat his pills! I've tried everything including crushing them in a can of tuna! No dice! He is very smart and can smell them a mile away! There is Definately a pecking order here! Some intimidation going on and I have to intervene occasionally! For the most part, it all works out! Thanks again everyone!
Welcome to the Crazy Ladies and Men ( yes, we have at least one here...)Community
