Kitten in heat & getting spayed

So it looks like my 4month old kitten is now in heat :( We'd hoped to get her spayed before then but the vet wanted to wait until she was 5-6 months old (mid-March). I have read conflicting things on the internet- is it safe to spay a cat while she is in heat? How long does it last until she is done a cycle? The poor thing seems to be MISERABLE. She is an indoor cat and I'm afraid too she is going to bolt out the door. Will most vets put this process off until she is not in heat? How will I know the cycle is over?

Thanks...I'm glad to hear no repercussions from it!! My ktity is now not to eat or drink from midnight tonight until the time of the operation! Poor thing!!! I will have to put her in a separate room with her litter box because my other older, fat cat wouldn't appreciate the loss of food and water for 8 hours!

I didn't think about it, but my cat Lucy was spayed in heat.  She had an appt scheduled in two weeks and went into heat, they got her in 3 days later, but I also had a boy kitten the same age.  Didn't think about that one real well.  :)

Thanks for the info :) I called the vet today and was a bit surprised, but they will do the operation on Monday. I was worried we'd have to wait for a full cycle, but the vet said that some cats NEVER even come out of heat!!! Yikes!! So, the operation will be more costly because she is already in heat (there is a "messy" fee..sorry, maybe tmi;)but at least it'll be done and hopefully my poor kitty will calm herself down.

Some vets won't spay when a cat is in heat, there is more blood engorgement of the ovaries and uterus and it makes a slightly more complex operation.  But most vets will spay at any time.  Many cats stay in heat about three weeks unless they are mated, at which point they come right out of heat.  You'll know she's not in heat any more when she stops yowling and putting her bottom suggestively in the air, but act fast on the spaying, she can come right back into heat within 3-4 weeks, and will do so pretty much throughout the spring and summer.
