Ear problems

My 3-year-old male cat has been digging at his ears non-stop for weeks. Everytime he shakes his head, it sounds like fluid, but none to be found.  Lately my mother and I noticed that he's becoming skinnier, constantly hungry after just receiving food, ears feel like they are on fire, nose is bone dry, and won't go outside nearly as much as he used to.  He just wants to sleep (more than usual) and not move.  He used to be a very active cat!  No worms have been seen. He is an outdoor/indoor cat, along with his sister. Any help please???

Cat's name: Mouda
Weight: was 13lbs, unsure of lately

So Mouda has an advanced stage of ear mites.  He was given a new medicine called Revolution.  There is a reason why it's called this.  It goes on the back of the neck like a flea treatment, but works for, worms, fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and ear mites and only cost us $15.  If the medicine does not work, he has to come back in to get test for Feline Leukemia :(

Hi Becca, yes Opus is right he does need to see a Vet ASAP.  Sounds as though he does have an infection and it will be driving him crazy at times. Perhaps he is so distraught with this ear problem that he doesn't feel like eating much, hence any weight-loss you may think he has. He's only three years old and he's a Tabby so he'll be a good strong cat.  Sounds as though he has a good home with you if he is/was 13lbs in weight.  Soon as the ear problem gets sorted he WILL reach his normal weight again.  I know its difficult but try not to worry!!  Keep us updated on what the Vet said/did for Mouda (who a lovely unusual name, by the way!).  Best wishes, DiamondFox

He's going to the vet on Monday.  I thought ear mites too, but then the fluid sounds and other symptoms appeared which are tell-tale signs of infection. I don't know if it's a coincidence or related, but I'll find out soon.  I'll keep you posted.
