My cat was in neighbor's car engine.

This morning our neighbor came over to tell us Jasper, our 5 year old cat, was under the hood of his work truck when he crunk it up. We took him to the vet immediately. He has a broken leg (possibly two broken legs) and may be paralyzed, a broken tail that has to be amputated, a gash on his backside, a gash in his face and possibly a broken pelvis along with possible internal injuries. The vet couldn't tell how bad his injuries are right away because they are waiting on him to come out of shock. He is grooming himself so the vet said that's hopeful but he is expecting multiple surgeries if they can get him to stabilize and it may be too much for his body to take. Has anyone ever experienced this situation and what was the outcome? I know there is a possibility of him recovering, but there is also the chance that he will be in pain the rest of his life, not able to walk on his own or have damages we can't see. I really don't want to put him down but I don't want him to live miserably either. Someone please offer me some advice on what I should do.

I was so sorry to read about your kitty's unfortunate accident. I am not pointing fingers but that is why one should bang on the hood of the car or truck before you start the engine. How is Jasper doing ?  We all care very much about cats here on the cat forum.  Everyone here is a cat parent and we help each other.

Hi sms,

This is going to take meeting with your vet when he comes out of shock. Your vet must be asked all these questions and his best outcome scenario. If your vet agrees this will be too much for his body to take then you are right not to put him through the pain and suffering he may have to live with.

They are doing wonderful things today and he may not be as bad as you think. Legs can be mended, tails can be amputated and gashes will heal. The paralysis would be my main concern--If that cannot be resolved and he will not have motility od the intestines than that is a very bad sign sorry to say.

I am not a vet , and that is why you and your vet must make these decisions after you have discussed all of the possibilities.

......and I am so very sorry to hear your dear little one has gone through this trauma. I will pray for a positive resolution, and hold you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Please keep us posted.  We are right there with you in your concern.
