Overweight Middle-Aged Kitty

My Kitty Anu is overweight a (bout 14 lbs on a frame that should be holding 10 lbs), and doesn't get exercise because we live in a small apartment, and I am handicapped. She is down to a fourth of a can of wet cat food per feeding (twice a day), with a tablespoon of pumpkin added for intestinal health. She also gets a sardine in the late afternoon, and a quarter cup of dry in the evening (I'm giving her "Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul" Senior, dry food), to keep her teeth clean. It doesn't seem to me like she's eating that much, but she doesn't seem to ever lose weight. She herself started eating less back in January, and I reduced her food to a third of a can, then a couple of months later she still wasn't eating all of her food within an hour, so I cut her back again to a fourth of a can, around March. She seems mostly fine with that, except when she is bored, then she thinks about eating more, and she whinges at me for food at times when it's not mealtime. If she gets on my lap though, then she'll forget all about eating. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to deal with this issue?

How old is your cat?

If she is old enough to be off of canned food then I would get rid of it completely. Canned food is really only good for kittens. The dry food will also allow her to eat some and then come back later for a snack. This way she'd still be within the range of food that she should be given per day.

I'm not sure -but maybe she needs a weight control food? Maybe I'm wrong, but my vet once told me that cats are nibblers and if they can nibble throughout the day they don't tend to eat as much in one sitting as when they are fed at a certain time.

I wish I knew what to say to help.  Have you contacted your vet for their opinion?  Good luck!
