FYI: Baby food, broth and other "people" food generally contain ONIONS and other flavorings that can cause Heinz-Body anaemia in cats. Very serious, kills. Be sure the baby food is only one ingredient- meat. No people broth because all ingredients don't have to listed in a way that you can easily tell what they are. When I tried to find a safe broth, whether organic, natural, etc. I couldn't. Really better safe than sorry. Opus88 is very knowledgeable, what I call an Advanced cat owner. When my boy needed medication, I asked a friend of my sisters' to help me. She too was an Advanced cat owner. Emergency vets' should always be considered if the problem escalates beyond your ability to respond in a timely fashion. Cats' have a small window between vague symptoms and serious problems. Good Luck, be sure he eats 2 days without food can cause irreversible problems.
sorry to hear of kitty's troubles I am glad your taking him to the Vet...in the meanwhile, run some hot water in the bathroom and get it all steamy in there, take kitty in with you and by breathing in the warm steam it will help him breath a bit better, gently wipe his little nose with a warm cloth to keep the gunk out....you can also get some INFANT SALINE SPRAY from your pharmacy and give just very tiny tiny drops into his nostrils...be sure its the plain saline and not any decongestant of any kind!!!!! ask the pharmacist to show you the right one.
Your Vet will/should give you some L-lysine to help build up kitties immune system.
I sure hope kitty will soon begin to feel much better. Your kitten likely has an Upper Respiratory Tract Disease or cat flu. and a secondary infection is possible Upper Respiratory Infection URI. in this case an antibiotic will be necessary, but otherwise with L-lysine and a stronger immune system your kitty should be able to fight this off.
Remember cats that can't smell won't eat.....so if kitty isn't eating you'll need to supplement for him by giving him small amounts of liquids and food with a dropper....either mix water with his normal can food or buy MEAT baby food. insert the dropper into the SIDE of the mouth back by the back molars and just squeeze a very tiny amount in at time giving kitty lots of time to swallow otherwise he will easily aspirate the food into his lungs and choke.....or get pneumonia. it just takes awhile to get used to this just remember do it very slowly takes alot of patience but your kitty needs to eat and drink.
good luck hon and post again if we can be of any help...
