constipated cat

Okay everyone: Now that Puddie seems to be eating better and a little more alert, he won't poop.
Took him to vet tonight.Hasn't passed any food since his enema on Monday. They hydrated him subcontaneously and now I wait. hate to subject him to another enema. They xrayed him and he is full of it, but so far doesn't go to the litter box. Any easy hints how to get him back on track???

Little Gigi is back at the foster home with her brother. They are holding her just in case I want her back. Right now, my concentration is getting him well. Whether or not that means her coming back to boost his morale. I can't tell. Don't want to bring her back if she has something going on in her. Only had her from Aug 8-20th. As I said before, she was the runt of the litter plus skin and bones. Adorable little creature and he did act like a mother cat licking her all over. She had been tested for the usual stuff and came clean except for coccidia. He had his stool checked last week and it was negative. Hope he doesn't test positive now as he cannot take any more meds.
Although he is eating, he is still sleeping alot and doesn't have any pep. He is curled up on a quilt and just faces the back of the chair. Can't seem to perk him up. He went to the screen door and I think he wanted to go out. His sleep is not a deep one. I walk into the room and he just looks at me. This has been the worst month ever.
If I didn't have this forum to go to I would be going more nutty.

He finally went? What a relief!

Ok so it seems as though the shelter food was not doing for him and so he had the runs all the time. Seems he’d been doing fine on Royal Canin. Hopefully this will not happen again. Did you get him tested for coccidian?

Why would a young cat’s mouth have bad odor? Many reasons actually: Diet, dental problems, gum, respiratory problems, or underlying diseases.

Bad breath is often caused by tartar build up on the teeth. Just like in dogs and humans, tartar on the teeth fosters the growth of oral bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds, airborne molecules that smell very unpleasant. Although tartar has not generally had time to accumulate enough to cause kitten bad breath, you should check the condition of your kitten's teeth and gums to be sure there is no tartar or inflammation there. If you see signs of trouble, a trip to the vet is probably in order.

Respiratory problems can also be a cause of kitten bad breath. This is usually easy to pinpoint because it will be accompanied by signs of respiratory illness. Again, like humans and dogs, cats can get viral or bacterial infections of the nasal passages, throat and lungs. In turn these infections can encourage the growth of bacteria and may cause feline bad breath. If your cat has a respiratory infection accompanied by bad breath, the breath problem should resolve as soon as the cat recovers.

Another unusual cause of feline bad breath can be underlying illness - some metabolic disorders and organ problems such as kidney disease can cause an unusual odor on the breath. In most cases, the odor will not the typical sulfur smell of classic halitosis, but may still be quite unpleasant. A kitten bad breath problem that can't be attributed to any other common cause may be a sign that your kitten has a more serious problem that should immediately be assessed by a vet.

One cause of feline bad breath that is particular to cats is feline acne. If your cat has feline acne, you will see black specks or bumps on the cat's chin.

And kittens usually are stinky back there. Puddie was just trying to clean her, which is what a momma cat would do, at least my momma cats have done that.

You are a saint! I rub his poor bootie last night with a warm wet cloth, rubbed his belly and then left the rest up to the Lord. I was so tired and so was he. Fell asleep and then this morning, Bingo-he pooped twice and peed. Still subdued a little. He has been poked and probed. Now have to make sure he drinks enough water.
He was overweight when I got him from the shelter Dec 08 from rescue. At that time he had loose bowels. he was checked for worms, etc. All clean, so he eats Royal Canin 33 dry food and Fancy feast medley turkey/chicken. He used to eat 1-2 cans a day. These are the small cans. I also gave him vitamins called Hugs & Kisses (Warren Eckstein).
This trouble all started when I brought home Gigi the 12 week old kitten. She had been cleared of all the usual FIV, but when  had her 2nd stool tested, it came back positive for coccidia. So she had a dose of Ponazuril, and as a precaution he had it too. Within 2 days he stopped eating and drinking. All he wanted to do was eat wheat grass, licked his lips, tried to eat, but couldn't. I thought this would only last a couple of days. Then he started to get lethargic at the same time we had a heat wave. This made things worse. Took him to vet. I really believe that he may have gotten too big a dose but are they going to admit that?? They told me that they use it all the time, He was a 16.6 oz kitty. Most of that med is used at shelters for kittens and Gigi didn't have any reaction to it. So it was assumed that something else caused this. He has had 3 xrays 3 blood tests, antibiotics, a pancreatic test (no results yet), 1 enema, thermometer stuck up his boom (no fever now) Poor Puddie looks at me with those beautiful eyes and I hug and kiss him and pray the Good Lord will watch over him and make him better. I do believe he misses Gigi. She is back at the foster home. Not sure whether I should bring her back or not.
Another question to you since you know your apples- Gigi was rescued and is quite scrawny and her bootie looks like a little round target and always smelled. Her breath for a little kitty was foul. Isn't that unusual for a kitten? I was constantly wiping her with kitty wipes. He was always licking her bootie. Who knows!!
So this is the skinny on Puddie.

Cats usually love the fish flavor. I buy the Carlson Norwegian Salmon Oil. There is no specific amount or limit. I pinch 2-3 capsules to release the liquid, the oil....and pour it all over the food and they really, really like it. This is something he might actually enjoy.

Poor kitty....has he suffered from this before?

What strength salmon oil do you use? he is so suspicious of anything I give him now. Especially taking the Clavamox. He runs when he sees me.
I will try the warm wet towel tonight. Tomorrow he goes for the enema if he doesn't go tonight. Poor kitty is so miserable. You could see he was completely full on the xray.

Also, what are you feeding him? And, are you sure there are no obstructions?

Well, I would think that the enema would work, because that's what enemas are for. What brand are they using?

Well, I feed my kitties raw food, so I am careful with their nutrients. I pay special attention to their fiber and fat intake, which can prevent constipation. I just posted on another thread about psyllium husk in powder form, which is GREAT for hairballs and constipation. I myself add this to my cats' diet along with salmon oil, which I buy at the vitamin shoppe, and works perfectly. I usually add three capsules of salmon oil to my cats' diet.

There is also a method which may or may not work but you do not lose by trying. Rub his bootie with a wet towel. This can really give them that feeling and sometimes they go and are successful. But you will have to keep rubbing his behind for at least 2 minutes.

I hope he gets back on track soon. Maybe he is constipated from all the meds and the fever, who knows. Also, you mentioned he had not been eating. So his system is probably just now adapting to getting food digested. But I am just trying to think out loud. Really, not going to the bathroom since Monday is really not good, not good.
