my cat had a yeast infection in his ears this summer and that was really uncomfortable and itchy for him. but i'm sure the dr. is righ, just thought i'd throw that out there too.
i am treating both cats, with zodiac, thats all the petshop had and the petshop is a hour away. and if my kitten only got that junk in one ear shouldn't she have it the other? and if wouldnt my other cat have it too? i looked im my bigger cats ear and its right pink(didnt see a thing) and i dont think that there is a vet that does house calls. and my kitten dosnt sratch half as much as she did before?? i dont get it...
It sounds like you have made a good start in getting ready of fleas in the household, but (not to scare you), I think you should know somethings about fleas. The adult fleas you saw are only about 1 to 5% of the total flea population in the household. Fleas also like hardwood floors in addtion to carpet. And, as I said, the cocoon or pupal stage is resistant to anything on the market so retreatment is essential. Also, it is very important to treat both cats, not just Mason. What is the treatment you are using for the cats?
The black gunk you are seeing in the ears is indicative of ear mites. There are some over the counter rememdies, but I STRONGLY recommend avoiding them. I can't believe a veterinarian is so far away from you...but, if I am reading your profile right, it sounds like you are up in Newfoundland (lived there when I was 2!!)..that helped to explain things a little more. Is there any mobile veterinarian or one who makes housecalls?
i have used spray with an Insect Growth regulator to treat fleas in my house, and i vaccumed like everything and i have no carpet in my house, trust me im that scared of bugs id do anything to get rid of them, and i only seen about 10 fleas in my whole home before i treated them, and like i said i didnt see a thing after the first treatment. a vet from here is about 3 hours away, i have no car so its not easy to get to a vet... i looked in my kittens ear and there is black stuff.. it kinda looks like coffee..lol.. but the treatment said it gets rid of fleas, ticks, mites, lice etc. so i donno.. reply asap please!!
WELCOME BACK...missed you
Congratulations on your new kitty and your other cat as well...As opus said, the picture is adorable!
I wouldn't be so sure that the flea problem is completely eradicated yet. Fleas on our pets lay eggs that fall off into the carpet, on to furniture, etc. These eggs will take 1-10 days to hatch out to larval stages that feed on organic debris in the environment. After another 5-9 days, the larva spin a cocoon and then another 5-10 days passes and adult fleas are ready to emerge into the environment. They can also stay in the cocoon for up to 5 months. The really scary thing is that nothing on the market will kill the fleas in their cocoons.
You might not be seeing fleas on the cats due to the flea treatments you are using (which brand are you using by the way?), but there might still be larval and cocoon stages in the house. Consider buying an area treatment spray with an Insect Growth regulator in it. Vacuum your home well, then treat the house. Vacuum every day for 2 weeks and then treat the house again. This protocol helps to stimulate the cocoons to hatch and then the adults will die when they get on your cats. Also, are you treating the adult cat for fleas as well?
Another consideration might be that the kitten has ear mites. Check with your veterinarian about a good product (like Revolution) that can help kill fleas and ear mites.
Good luck to you!
sorry looked at an enlargment of the photo and there are TWO beautiful kitties it the picture...they are lovely!!
hi...mason is beautiful!
sorry for all you're flea problems but sounds as if u shd have that under control.
I thk u may need a vet to look at the ear....is there some black spots around the ear canal?
the kitty may have mites?
best to have a vet see just incase again its something contagious, then again it may just need a good cleaning.
the vet clinic has an excellent ear solution called 'ear cleansing solution'
good luck, let us know ok
