Kitten getting spayed-need opinions please

Hi All!

I will be calling this week to make an appointment for my kitten to get spayed. My vet does his surgeries early in the morning before office hours begin and yet he wants to keep her overnight and have us pick her up the following morning. I love my vet and feel very comfortable with him but my concern is that she will be there for up to 10 hours alone in a cage. They don't have anyone who stays overnight with the animals. I want to pick her up at the end of the day and take her home. I just feel that if something goes wrong, no one will be there to help her. If she is home here she can stay in the bedroom where the other animals won't have access to her. She will have her bed, food, water, and of course...me.

Am I just being paranoid or a doting mother? Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would ask the vet what the reason behind keeping her there is.  If noone is going to be there than i see no point in leaving her.

I remember when the beagle was spayed, the vet said oh she will be quiet for a few days.  Having a beagle puppy around is an experience all in itself, so anyways i am thinking YES, peace and quiet for a few days......WRONG, she was jumping on the bed the next morning!!  How i miss that girl~~*sniff* *sniff*

Sounds like an old school vet.  Most don't even use stitches anymore.  He may be padding his bill or he may be covering his butt.  Having said that, she should be fine either way.  If she is going to have a problem (reaction to anesthesia or problem with the incision site) those would present by the end of the business day of surgery.

Thank you both so much for your comments. He means bring her in early on the day of the surgery and have her spend that night at his office. That is my concern. Hubby is saying it is best for her to stay because his fear is that she will want to interact here at home and she may rip her stitches or something. My fear is that something will happen overnight and no one will be there to care for her. She is my baby and I feel she is best home with us. Heck, if her bed was big enough I would sleep in it with her!!!

Thanks again. I am going to talk to him once more before we go and weigh all options.

Hi B, that does seem odd your vet wants her to stay overnight after an early morning surgery.  Even if he means BEFORE the surgery, that's still unusual.  If your vet insists for some reason, you can always take her bed so she has something of her own to sleep on.

Let us know...

hi IBK....I think what your Vet means is to keep her overnight the night BEFORE the surgery since he does the surgeries so early in the am. that way to be sure she is food and water free all night and also prepped early with no waiting for patient to arrive....than you would come and take her home following, check this out but I'm pretty sure thats what he means....good luck and keep us posted...alway good to be a bit paranoid and doting!!! :-)
