I don't think so. I don't deal with dogs much (still love 'em!) so I'm not familiar with most of their illnesses. I'd google/check to be sure, but it doesn't sound like it's a problem. I'm glad the cat's doing better. The problem with this disease is it's cyclical and you have to be prepared for recurrences of attacks. And remember it's very deadly to young kittens. They usually have deadly occurrences at around 8 weeks and 6 months. That's a rough estimate mind you.
Thanks so much for your input. The adult cat that we've been dosing has been eating & drinking and walking well. We are continuing to dose him each day and it does seem to be helping more each time. So far, none of the other critters appear to be infected. Do you know if this is feline leukemia, can it affect our dog? We do have a vet, but due to expenses we generally vaccinate & treat the cats ourselves. We had one cat a couple of years ago that we brought into the vet, it cost us almost $1000 and he ended up dying at home several months later.
Ugh... I'm sorry.
When we lose a litter this way, it's usually Feline Aids related (or feline leukimia). Generally you're seeing a respiratory infection as a secondary symptom, the death is usually a result of renal system shut down. It's VERY hard to get kittens through this and I hate to say it but we usually have them put down if they get to this state (Different situation though, we deal with mucho kittens/cats and we unfortunately have to deal in terms of cost/time related issues in treatment).
You can mega dose with the antibiotics (1/2 mg 3 x until recovered or passed (I'm basing this of children's amoxy, btw, I'm taking a chance on assuming the dosage is equivalent I'm just guessing and it MIGHT help). Clearing out the inevitable infection can give them the extra boost to fight through the rest (I'm assuming a vet isn't an option?).
Otherwise, give it a tiny amount of water, probably morning and night with an oral syringe if you have it. Not to much, as if the kidney's aren't functioning properly, well, you get the idea.
Otherwise, give it a tiny amount of water. Keep it warm (place on a heating pad?) and leave it in a dark cool, dry room. We have one of those little plug in devices (gentle vapors) which releases a menthol substance. If you've got something like this, put it in the bathroom and run the shower on hot so it steams and see if it helps (assuming he starts having respiratory issues, they usually do).
The kitten just passed. Is there any chance this could be feline viral sinusitis or feline distemper?
We have been administering via syringe. I want to mention that the penicillin seems to be working, however, one of our kittens came down with the same odor this morning, and he is now almost comatose and dying. He has no nasal discharge. Just the foul smell about him. Any other ideas??? PLEASE HELP!!!!
Ummm... i'm not sure about using penicillin on a cat (I'm not saying it's not okay, I'm just not familiar with it being used that way). It sounds like a respiratory infection. Usually the antibiotic I use (from vet) is essentially children's amoxicillin, when you dose him, it should be three times a day, for three-four days or until it clears up. It sounds like you under dosed him the next day and the medication was insufficient.
I believe the ratio is about 1 mg per 1 pd, but i can't remember offhand so be wary of this information. It's best to deliver it orally as well (I'm not sure if you meant oral or intravenous syringe).
