bare tummy and unhappy

my 13 year old beautiful 14 lb. loving cat has turned unhappy, nips at me suddenly, starts banging tail in the middle of petting, slinks off and hides at sounds in hall, or loud sounds and mostly will not stop- pulling hair out of whole stomach area. have put him on special food (medi-cal intestinal), done the feliway, and though he is on the royal canin gastrointestinal dry I see it has chicken.  The vet talks about putting him on some kind of antidepressant which costs a fortune.  I have m.s. am sick and don't have money to spend a fortune on lots of things that won't work. Though on the other hand I am heart-broken and feel like I have lost my best friend.  Can someone at least tell me couple things from what I have read here.  How do we administer omega 3 and in what form to him?  I moved in June and he can  now go out on the safe balcony which he loves.  I am surrounded by trees and there are leaves on the porch. could he be allergic?  He has scratched carpet part of cat tree so plastic has come through-I've turned that part to wall now-could that have started it. I don't know what to do???? help please.

He could be allergic to new things in your home.  Do you have carpet or new rugs?  Changed laundry detergents or other cleaning items?  Anything he could come into contact with that is different than before?

Hi Kaitlin,

Looks like you kitty is having some senior moments. Normal for a cat 13years old. This is when then start losing some of their senses like smell, taste, and hearing. Makes them a bit grumpy just like human seniors.

Also Hyperthyroidism is something most cats will get if they live long enough. Read up on it there may be some signs of that he is showing. I don't know about the omega 3 or if anti-depressants are something that will work, but having a general check-up at the vets seems like a good idea just to make sure nothing else is going on. There are meds for Hyperthyroidism.

Does he like to be brushed, if so spend some one an one loving time with him grooming him. It is a bond that can't be beat. Mostly he probably just want to sleep more, just like human seniors. He also may have some arthritic issues.

He is still you best bud, he just want more him time now that he is getting older--give him his space and he will come to you when he wants your lovin.

Keep us posted, please

Moving is traumatic.
Once a few yrs ago when I left CR and my cat, when I returned she peed in my bed next to me.
She has more confidence in my devotion to her now.
I don't even think antidepressants work for me, let alone for an animal.
Sorry I don't know about the omega.
Have you tried playing with her w new toys. I make my Girls toys. I tear up old sheets. Some parts I tear into strips about a foot long. Some strips I put a knot in the end.
When she wants to play hard, I have to be careful too.
Good luck. Give her as much attention as possible.
I tried the raw food bit once. You may want to try that. Sole uncooked chicken parts. Served room temp. It was a hassle. But it helped bring about some change in personality.
When MB needs me, she'll spoon me at night. She's a doll. Knows to come when called. No repeats of pee incident. She's even good to my husband although she rarely sees him as he works out of the country.
Maybe you could get her a pet. MB loves the dog.  Maxy
