4 1/2 goofing around too much

Hi, my son is 4 1/2 years old. He goes to pre-k at a montessori school. Everytime I talked to his teachers about how he does at school, they always said "he is fine but if they leave him to do his project by himself, he will goof around.". And he always goofs around at home also. We have to repeat things to him over and over. My husband and I are worried that he might have ADHD. Or is it normal for a boy in his age? Should I talk to any pediatric psycologist? Thank you.

The Montessori experience is a bit more open ended, which would leave room for "goofing around." Children have time and materials to explore, and often learn from each other. It sounds like perhaps he may need a bit more guidance as he adapts to the curriculum. Is the class mixed ages? Perhaps he would be better grouped with other children in the classroom. it sounds like it may be a management issue? While the Montessori theory sounds great, I can see where there can be flaws if the teacher is not properly trained. Or is he not interested in the project or perhaps it's not within his developmental abilities.
I work Pre-K, and we know that there are some children who cannot be left to complete a project on their own. And we know it is normal. We provide extra guidance to those children.

Ummmm,  nothing "leads" to ADHD.  You have it or you don't.  Its possible he has it now, or its possible that he is only 4.5 and likes doing his own thing.  You really have to give this a bit more time. And I totally agree with what tiredbuthappy says about Montessori.  I'm not dishing them.  They were great for my kids.  You might want to drop by and actually see how they work with him.
But just in case you want to read up on ADHD, this is a pretty good site.    http://www.rxlist.com/attention_deficit_hyperactivity_disorder_adhd/article.htm#tocb
Hope this helps.  I monitor the ADHD site - if you have any questions about ADHD - if you post there, I will see it.

I know it's normal for boys to goof around but not all the time. At school, if the teachers leave him to complete his project by himself, he will lose his concentration by goofing around or playing with his projects instead of finishing it. He has to take one-on-one lessons with the teachers all the time. At home sometimes we have to repeat things over and over and it takes him so long to do one thing. I love to see him play and relax as well but not at school in the morning while everyone else is learning. Is there anyway that I can help him to focus on what he's doing more? I don't think that he has ADHD yet but just afraid that his current behavior will lead to ADHD later on. Thank you for your advice. :)

4 and a half year old boys do goof around.  Its not unusual.  If he has goofed around at home, he will goof around at preschool because he hasn't learned a different behavior.  If after a month or so, things are still unsettled, then you need to talk to this teacher.  By the way, my kids went to a montessori school.   It was a wonderful experience, but they do allow kids to goof around.  Long story short, unless there is a lot that you are not telling us, give it some time.  If you do have any specific questions, I have been monitoring the ADHD site for over 4 years.  If you post over there, I will see it.  Hope this helps.
