51/2 yr. old behavior problems

We have a very smart  51/2 year old son,he has a great imaganation, plays well with other children and is good in kindergarten(when we can get him to go).Our problem is he just won't listen, throws things and he's getting aggressive hitting and kicking mainly my wife and I,but sometimes his 3 year old sister. My wife thinks that since this has really has gotten worse since school started that it's because there are mentally handicapped children in his class that get's the majority of the teachers attenion,so he acts that way at home to get more attenion. We have tried to explain that those children have a problem with there brains and that's why they act the way they do and that he is normal and does not need to act up to get attenion. We have tried grounding, taking toys away, time out, spanking but all that does is makes matters worse and he gets more aggressive. We had him tested for add and he tested ok.My wife wants to put him in another school without mentally hanicapped children or home school him,but I don't think that the right answer. So I am looking for some advise, both my wife and I are about to loose our minds.                                                   Can anybody Help us?

I have to agree with DustyL. The handicap kids are not the issue. I would speak with his teacher and princiapl and PED if need be. Your son is manipulating you , like most 5 yr olds do.

Also, keep in mind, schools that have handicap children in the same class tend to have special needs teacher ALSO in those classrooms to assist the main teacher. If you're that concerned with it... talk to the principal about your concerns i am sure s/he will be glad to cap your worries =]

"because there are mentally handicapped children in his class that get's the majority of the teachers attenion,so he acts that way at home to get more attenion."

Thats probably NOT the reason. It sounds like your issue is at home, not at school. For starters ask his teacher what he's like at school to get a feel for things, i doubt he acts the same in school that he does as home. It sounds like your son knows how to push your buttons and is enjoying doing so for no other reason than at one point he was allowed to without repercussion and he's 5 years old (it's his job to find his limit)!!! It's YOUR job as parents to set that limit and STICK TO IT!!!!

First thing I want you to do is go to the nearest book store and purchase the book called "SOS HELP FOR PARENTS" it's a cheap book and it will help you with EVERYTHING you just mentioned!!! You and your wife can read it together it shouldn't take you long (took me about 2 days due to interruptions) and once your done... IMPLIMENT what you learned!!! You will notice a 200% difference in your son within 2 weeks!!!!

I wouldn't change schools, thats only going to create another change in his life that he doesn't need and probably will NOT change his behavior for the good!!! kindergarden is new, he needs to adjust and there are going to always be handicap children in his life, so i wouldn't suggest sheltering him from them or he could turn out to be one of those kids who terrorize disabled people in life.... of which i am sure you wouldn't want.

Go buy the book... it will be the best $15.00 you've spent in a long time!!!!!! TRUST ME =]

Good Luck!

Im not an expert but I would remove him from the school of handicapped kids, it seems cruel to have a normal child with slower kids.
