7 yr old Pooping Pants

I have a 7 year old son who has been potty trained since he was 2 and a half. Over this last year he has begun to poop his pants. I have tried everything from spanking, yelling, talking and even rewarding him when he doesn't poop his pants. Nothing seems to be working. It has happened at school, church, restaurants, outings, at home, there seems to be no pattern or logical reason such as he is playing and doesn't want to stop. Literally last night he was 10 feet from the bathroom reading a book and did it. Worse, he will sit in it until I smell it and get after him. He seems to have no qualms that he is dirty and stinky. I am simply at wits end. I got the school counselor involved and she couldn't seem to help either. I am slightly concerned that there is possibly a medical problem at the root of this, but it doesn't seem to explain his indifference to the situation. His father was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 18 and remembers having problems from the time he was a small boy. Could this be the beginning of just such disease?

My 6 year old has been also trying to hold in his poop in and he turns bright red and he could be looking right at the bathroom door.It seems to be be happening more and more.I have also done everything,he has not watched TV in like a month,he can't play video games, play on the computer, play outside...The kid has nothing left and doesn't seem to give me a straight answer of why he is doing this.He does not do it at his Dad's house but he does it when he comes home everytime. It started out that he was pooping in his pants and hiding it,that was not fun to find. Now he holds it in and I am so afraid that there is really something wrong with him, maybe physically or mentally. He has always been difficult but this is rediculous.I made an appt. with his Dr but it never seems to get me anywhere.I think maybe it started out has a rebelious thing but now it seems more like a habit. This has been going on for about a year now,I have absolutely had it! I feel horrible for punishing him but he has always been defiant with me and more enjoys punishment then rewards. He has been rewarded for not pooping in his pants but it doesn't fase him.HELP!

I forgot to mention that there is a medical condition (I forget the name) that has to due with the loss of "the feeling" of having to go poop from being constipated.  I found this out by searching the net and I'm going to mention it our dr.

My 6 year old son is doing the same exact thing.  At first I thought that he was being bullied by his older cousin who he sees every weekend, but after doing some research on the net I am beginning to believe that he may be constipated.  We were out this evening shopping and I looked at him and knew from the look on his face that he was having a problem.  He was trying to hold the poop in, his face was bright red and he looked so embarrassed.  I rushed him to the bathroom and we caught it in time.  He has been doing this for two weeks now and everytime I asked him what was going on he would say that he was doing it because he older brother and cousin were mean to him.  He has always been a sensitive child so I had a long talk with my older son and he really swore that he hasn't been overly mean to his brother ( other then the normal brother stuff).  Now that I am reading all of these other parents problems, my son has complained of stomach pain.  So, tomorrow we are going to the doctor.  I think you should look into the constipation apparently it is very common in boys.  I hope this helps.  I was so relieved that we aren't the only parents going through this. I feel terrible because I too have screamed and gotten after him for doing this and now it really wasn't his fault. It is very frustrating.  We are also at our witts end!

If it is nothing medical, make him start wearing diapers again to try and embarass him. I use to do the same thing when I was younger for absolutly no reason, the emarassment of wearing diapers again snapped me out of it.
