Anger/Rages

My almost 9 year son has always had anger issues since he was a toddler.. here lately we have been having alot of trouble with him and his anger control. he gets so angry that he starts beatting his head against things, hitting himself or even trying to take it out on others by hitting or kicking them. ex. a few nights ago he got in trouble and i sat him  by the icebox and he began to head butt the icebox and dented it in 3 places with his forhead. thats just an example of what he does when he gets angry. he also doesnt remember doing it later when you talk to him about it when he has calmed down. its like when he gets angry he blacks out and dont remember. i feel that he gets way to angry way to easy and its over nothing most of the time. What else can I do....HELP

Could you allow him choices of times when he has to do the chores, or do you tell him he has to do it immediately ? sometimes children do get upset if things are demanded especially if they are busy doing something else .so instead of telling him 'Go clean up your Room ' say ' Do you want to clean up your room before dinner so you have time after Dinner to watch TV same with homework , is it written in stone that a time frame is adhered to ?

What is it that triggers this behavior, what happens just prior to a tantrum as you have described ?
