Can't let go

When my son was 2 my boyfriedn bought him Nike jordan shoes and my son loved them. He's now almost 3 and the shoes are WAY too small for him. I bought a cheap pair of shoes for him but when I tried to put them on him he screamed hysterically, kicked, and ripped the shoes off then ran and got his old shoes. I decided I'd just get another pair of Jordans and see if it's be fine. They were slightly different in style and color and my son reacted the same way once he noticed.I've tried time outs when he screams. Tried rewards for trying the shoes on. Tried putting them on and associating them with something he likes. I've even tried just leaving the shoes near him so he gets used to them. The old shoes are so small now that his toes are against the front and I don't want it to be like binding his feet but he just won't wear shoes that aren't the old ones. What do I do???

Thanks for all the great ideas. I took the new jordans I bought and had my boyfriend give them to him and it worked beautiful. Thanks!

Let him wear them until he himself decides they hurt too much.  Boyfriend presenting new shoes sounds like a great idea.

My son went through a period when he was 3 of not wanting to get any older, and he strongly resisted (to the point of crying) anyone's sprightly comment that he was getting bigger.  If he had also had to change a favorite pair of shoes at that time, it would have been all over.  Any chance your son is simply going through that?  (My son went through it partly because there was talk of a new baby, and he was fearful of losing the cuddle-and-coddle monopoly that he had.)

Could your boyfriend present him with another pair of shoes?

This won't be the biggest battle you have to deal with.  ;D
