Suggestions for cry baby that is turning 5

My daughter cries and flaps her arms, jumps up and down (literaly has a melt down) when it is time to leave somewhere. This evening it was time to leave someones house and she wanted to stay for supper. I told her we had to leave and there was to be no crying and, she had her melt down hissy fit.  She over reacts in situations that deal with her getting hurt as well. (She stepped on a sticker in the grass and she started balling her head off)  I don't know if she does it for attention or because she knows it is nerve wracking to a lot of people (ME) But I am tired of it. We have a little star chart she gets for things, and one of them is for being polite and mannerly.  (It has 2 stars, but hey its a start, right?  I worry there is some emotional issue with her.  Please help! Any advice would be great, my ped. says I'm the problem.  Yes, she does this ONLY around me, and sometimes her daddy, but not so much in the class.

She may be highly sensitive

And try to calm your nerves - my son stops acting out when peopel around react in a calm, adult manner.

I think that she has found out that this behavior works for her and allows her to get her way.  You deal with this by either completely ignoring it (which is hard), or having immediate consequences.  You pick her up and take her to a time out area.
