My 5 year old still poops on himself

My son is 5 and still poops in his pants. I don't mean he ever stopped. I mean he still does. He has times when he goes a long time without doing so, but then he goes right back to doing it again. Why!? I don't know else to do.

Things we tried:

reward system
taking things away
talking
time outs
videos
books
offering to help him
offering to be in the bathroom with him

and nothing works

My son did it until around 4.5 years of age, finally he stopped on his own, but I was so happy. It's a really big pain. I wish I had some solutions for you.
